The Port of Los Angeles is on track to process 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2025, achieving this significant milestone for only the third time in its history. Data released on November 18, 2025, indicates that the port handled over 848,000 TEUs in October, reflecting a 4% decrease from September and a 6.3% dip year-over-year compared to October 2024.

Despite the October decline, the port reported a 2% year-over-year increase in cargo volumes for the first ten months of 2025, processing more than 8.6 million TEUs as of October 31, 2025. “With six weeks to go, we are within reach of the 10 million container unit mark for the year,” stated Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. He credited the performance to the skill and dedication of the waterfront workforce and terminal operators, who ensure the port operates safely and efficiently.

Looking ahead, Seroka anticipates a softening of cargo volumes in November and December compared to the previous year. He explained that businesses rushed to bring in shipments toward the end of 2024 due to expected tariffs from the incoming Trump administration. Currently, retail and manufacturing inventories are reportedly “well-stocked,” which lessens the demand for a surge in cargo similar to last year’s end-of-year rush.

Current Trends and Future Outlook

The fluctuations in cargo volumes at the Port of Los Angeles reflect broader trends in global trade. The decrease in October’s numbers is attributed in part to a more stable economic environment compared to the previous year, which saw heightened urgency among businesses to import goods ahead of potential tariffs. This year, the focus appears to be on maintaining balanced inventories rather than overwhelming shipments.

As the holiday season approaches, the port’s operations remain crucial to the supply chain, serving as a primary entry point for goods destined for various markets across the United States and beyond. The efficiency of the port is critical as it navigates the challenges of fluctuating demands and potential shifts in trade policies.

In summary, while October’s data highlights a temporary downturn in cargo volumes, the Port of Los Angeles is poised to reach a significant annual milestone. With continued efforts from its workforce and leadership, the port remains a vital component of international trade and commerce.
