Rydell Donates Three Cars to Empower Community Members
On December 19, 2023, Rydell Automotive celebrated the fourth annual Angels on Wheels event in Grand Forks, donating three pre-owned vehicles to clients of the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC). The initiative aims to provide essential transportation to individuals who have experienced significant trauma, offering them a pathway to greater independence and self-sufficiency.
For Desiree Freadrich, receiving a vehicle was a transformative moment. She described the experience as both “amazing” and “overwhelming.” Freadrich expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m really overwhelmed, but I’m very happy and proud that there’s people like this in our community to do stuff for people like me.” The new vehicle will enable her to attend appointments and manage daily tasks without relying on others for transportation.
The Angels on Wheels program was established to support and empower individuals facing transportation barriers. Rydell General Manager Ben Cahalan emphasized the significance of reliable transportation, stating, “Each year, Angels on Wheels reminds us of the profound impact reliable transportation can have on someone’s life. These vehicles are more than a means of getting from place to place — they are tools for healing, stability, and new beginnings.”
Each vehicle was generously donated by one of Rydell’s Grand Forks locations: Rydell GM, Rydell Honda Nissan, and Rydell Toyota. The partnership with CVIC is crucial, as the center assists clients in overcoming obstacles related to domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and stalking.
Sheila Morris, CVIC’s Vice President of Advocacy, expressed enthusiasm about the program’s impact. “These are individuals who have experienced extreme trauma in their lives,” she said. “Transportation has been a huge barrier for them, so today, matching them with a vehicle is going to be a really important step in their self-sufficiency.”
Recipients of the vehicles also received additional support, including Rydell gift cards for future oil changes, $300 gas cards donated by Northdale Oil, and gift baskets featuring vouchers to local businesses such as Darcy’s Cafe, L&M Meats, Happy Joe’s Pizza, and HudSun Wellness Center and Tanning. Safe Kids Grand Forks contributed car seats for children, ensuring safety with on-site installation.
Another recipient, Cydney Richards, shared her astonishment at receiving a vehicle. “It feels really good,” she said. “It’s mind-blowing, actually. I’m just so excited, and I’m really appreciative.” Previously reliant on ride-sharing services to get to work, Richards noted the timing of this donation was especially beneficial as winter weather sets in. “I can’t wait to take it for a spin,” she added.
The process for selecting clients for vehicle donations involves collaboration between CVIC and Rydell. Clients must possess a valid driver’s license and the financial resources to obtain car insurance. This careful matching ensures that the vehicles meet the specific needs of each recipient, facilitating their ability to commute to work, transport children to school, and attend medical appointments.
Morris highlighted the critical role transportation plays in the lives of these individuals: “Without transportation, things can become extremely difficult, and this really makes a momentous impact on their lives.” The Angels on Wheels program not only provides vehicles but also symbolizes hope and empowerment, reinforcing community support for those in need.
