Nineteen golfers took to the course at Corbin Hills Golf Club on December 14, 2023, to participate in the annual Sunday Afternoon Regulars Open Golf Tournament. Despite facing cold and blustery conditions, the event successfully raised $2,115 for the Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, benefiting local families during the holiday season.

The three-man team of Alan Barefoot, David Ketner, and Jeff Holshouser emerged victorious in a competitive field. Tournament committee member Stan Honeycutt highlighted the skill of the championship team, noting that “Jeff is one of the county’s best golfers, Dave is a consistent, solid ball striker, and the southpaw Barefoot’s game is often compared to tour pro Phil Mickelson by local golfers.” Their strong performance was no surprise given their collective abilities.

Competitive Spirit Shines Through

Second place in the tournament went to the team of Randy Bingham, Gaines Beard, Rick Ridenhour, and Kip Honeycutt. The third position was claimed by the duo of Steve Shuping and the Millers—Gary, Justin, and Caleb. The competitive spirit among participants created an enjoyable atmosphere, even as participants braved the chilly weather.

Honeycutt expressed gratitude towards the community for its support, saying, “Despite the cold and wind, we had a very competitive tournament.” He emphasized the positive impact of the event, which brought together local golfers for a good cause.

Community Contributions Highlighted

Local businesses also played a significant role in the tournament’s success. Special thanks were extended to Tim Gardner and the Corbin Hills Golf Club for their support. Additionally, several local businesses contributed door prizes, including Lee VonCanon from R.H. Barringer Distribution, Bob Timm of Carolina Golf Mart, Jay Hill from The Cardinal Golf Club, and Chad Campbell of the Country Club of Salisbury.

The tournament not only showcased golfing talent but also highlighted the community’s commitment to supporting its members during the holidays. Participants left the course knowing their efforts would help spread joy and warmth to families in need through the Christmas Happiness Fund.
