Heroic Rescue: Deputies Save Paragliders from Drowning in Malibu
UPDATE: Two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies executed a dramatic ocean rescue today, saving two paragliders from drowning off Carbon Beach, Malibu. The incident unfolded around 12:30 p.m. when a man and woman crashed into the ocean, struggling to stay afloat as their equipment pulled them under.
Witnesses reported that the pair became ensnared in their parachutes, with cords wrapping around their feet, making their situation increasingly perilous. Deputies Christopher Matkin and Sevak Grigoryan received the urgent call for help and sprang into action without hesitation.
Body camera footage captures the harrowing moment as the deputies drop their gear on the sand and race into the water. “When we first got there, the fog was very dense. We could only make out the outline of the parachute,” Matkin stated. “Once we got closer to the water’s edge, we were able to see the two victims in the water.”
The deputies quickly assessed the situation, taking out their knives to cut through the tangled cords. Their swift actions freed the paragliders, who were visibly shaken but ultimately unharmed. After the rescue, both paragliders were treated at the scene and did not appear to have sustained serious injuries.
The rescue underscores the critical role of first responders in life-threatening situations. The quick response and bravery of Deputies Matkin and Grigoryan have drawn widespread praise from the community, highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness and swift action.
As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, the public is reminded of the risks associated with paragliding, particularly in challenging weather conditions.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the bravery exhibited by law enforcement and the impact they have on saving lives during emergencies. Stay tuned for further updates as more details emerge about the paragliding accident and the ongoing investigation.
For now, the heroic actions of these deputies shine a light on the commitment of first responders to protect and serve their communities.
