Yungblud Captivates Rock Legends with Breakthrough Album Idols
Yungblud, the British musician born Dominic Harrison, achieved a significant milestone in his career with the release of his 2025 album, Idols. The album, which pays homage to his rock heroes, resulted in a remarkable turnaround as he received recognition from some of the legends he idolized. Notably, Ozzy Osbourne invited him to perform “Changes” at his final concert, marking a pivotal moment in Yungblud’s journey.
The success of Idols facilitated collaborations with iconic rock bands such as Aerosmith and Smashing Pumpkins, leading to the production of an entire EP. Over the past eight years, Yungblud had been establishing himself in the U.K. music scene with a diverse range of sounds, from hip-hop and punk fusions to pop influences. However, it was his embrace of classic rock on Idols that propelled him into the American market, culminating in three Grammy nominations and an extensive tour planned for 2026.
Despite his flamboyant style, which includes eyeliner and leather pants, Yungblud has faced criticism. He remains undeterred, stating, “A lot of people have a lot to say about me. But that’s what I’m here for.” After recently cancelling some concerts, he acknowledged the importance of taking time for mental health. “I have a tendency to run and run until the wheels fall off,” he explained, recognizing the need for balance as he prepares for an extensive 18-month touring schedule.
Yungblud emphasized the emotional toll of rapid success, remarking, “People forget that emotionally, success can sometimes be just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than lack of success.” He reflects on his decade-long journey in the industry, expressing gratitude for the recognition he has finally received. “It takes 10 years to become an overnight success, doesn’t it?” he said.
As he turned 28 in August, Yungblud confronted the pressures often associated with the so-called “27 Club,” a term referring to several legendary musicians who died at that age. He acknowledged the weight of this narrative but ultimately viewed his experiences as a journey of self-discovery. “When I hit 27 and when I hit Idols, this was a moment of really doing what I wanted to do,” he noted.
Reflecting on his previous self-titled album, Yungblud expressed disappointment in its lack of direction. He described it as a reaction to outside pressures, stating, “There was no journey, no cohesive through line, no sense of identity.” His evolution as an artist, culminating in Idols, represents a reclaiming of his identity and artistic vision.
Yungblud is resolute in his independence as an artist, firmly stating, “I am not made to compromise.” He clarified misconceptions about his career, asserting that he has faced significant challenges within the music industry and has fought to maintain control over his work. “One of the biggest misconceptions about me is that I had everything handed to me by the industry,” he remarked.
His distinct image has invited both admiration and criticism. Yungblud finds humor in accusations of being an “industry plant,” stating, “If I’m an industry plant, I’ve planted the fucking plant myself.” He values the connection he has with his audience, emphasizing the importance of community in his performances.
When discussing his vocal abilities, Yungblud addressed common misconceptions related to the use of autotune in his recordings. “Let me tell you about autotune. You get out what you put in,” he explained, asserting that his artistic choices are driven by his vision for each project. He prefers a more spontaneous recording process, often recording songs in just a couple of takes to capture the raw emotion.
Before performing at Osbourne’s farewell concert, Yungblud faced significant pressure. “I didn’t sleep a fucking wink,” he recalled, noting the challenge of performing in front of an audience that included many who were unfamiliar with his work. Despite the nerves, he embraced the opportunity to honor a musical hero and share a deeply personal moment on stage.
As Yungblud continues to build on his success, he is also preparing for future projects. He mentioned plans for a double album, with the second part of Idols expected to explore more realistic themes. Collaborating with producer Andrew Watt, he aims for a minimalist sound that emphasizes his vocal strength.
Yungblud’s recent collaboration with rock veteran Eddie Vedder has further solidified his place within the rock community. Their mutual respect and shared experiences illustrate the supportive nature of the genre, as Yungblud finds inspiration from both veteran artists and his own journey.
With an impressive trajectory ahead, Yungblud is poised to continue captivating audiences worldwide, armed with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to authenticity in his music.
