Urgent Update: San Francisco Athletic Director Larry Williams Dies at 62

UPDATE: Tragedy strikes as Larry Williams, the University of San Francisco‘s athletic director, has died at the age of 62 while working out at a gym on campus. The shocking news broke on Thursday morning at the War Memorial Gym within the Sobrato Center, where he led the athletic department since July 2022.
Details surrounding his death remain unclear as officials have not released a cause. In a heartfelt letter to the university community, USF President Salvador Aceves expressed condolences, stating, “Our prayers go out to Larry’s wife, Laura, their children, Kristin, Sean, Scott, Eric, and Louis, their families, and his grandchildren.” He also extended his thoughts to the university’s 250 student-athletes and the dedicated coaches and staff under Williams’ leadership.
Williams was a celebrated figure in collegiate sports, known for his impressive athletic background. He was a two-time All-America selection at offensive line for Notre Dame and played in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns from 1985 to 1992, starting in 33 games. His commitment to education was evident as he earned a law degree while still an active player. Prior to his role at USF, Williams served as athletic director at the University of Portland from 2004 to 2011 and held positions at Marquette and Akron.
In the wake of this devastating loss, Stephanie Shrieve-Hawkins, the deputy athletic director, has been named the interim athletic director. The university community is coming together to mourn a leader who profoundly impacted many lives.
This sudden event raises questions about the future direction of the athletic department and how the university will honor Williams’ legacy. As the community processes this loss, more information is expected to emerge. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
