University of Utah’s Cheenu Raghuraman Merges Dance with Neurology

Raghuraman’s research focuses on the proprioception of fish and the impact of cone snail venom on their spatial awareness. Proprioception, the ability to sense one’s body position in space, is a central theme in Raghuraman’s work. He describes it in relatable terms: “If you close your eyes and put your fingers together above your head, you know exactly where the tips of your fingers are, right? That property is called ‘proprioception’; your body knows where your limbs are in three-dimensional space.” This analogy, shared in an interview with “Humans of the U,” illustrates the importance of making complex scientific concepts accessible.
Raghuraman employs traditional Indian dance as a teaching tool, using its precise movements to visually represent the principles underlying his research. By doing so, he transforms intricate neurological ideas into formats that resonate with audiences. He believes that science communication should prioritize clarity, stating, “We strive to simplify—not dumb down—their work for different audiences.” This approach involves taking students into schools to participate in simple experiments, making science more approachable and engaging.
His journey into the realm of marine biology began when he moved from Sastra Deemed University in South India to the University of Utah. Adapting to life in a new country presented challenges, including his first experience with a snowstorm, which he recalls as a stark introduction to his new environment.
