Rare Diamond Ring from Titanic Debuts at Las Vegas Exhibition

A rare diamond ring recovered from the wreck of the RMS Titanic is now on display at the TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition in Las Vegas. This marks the first time in a decade that this unique artifact has been showcased to the public. The ring features three old European-cut diamonds, including a stunning 2-carat pear-shaped center stone, flanked by two 1-carat round diamonds. It was retrieved during the first recovery expedition by RMS Titanic Inc. (RMST) in 1987.
The ring was found within a single leather bag in the Titanic’s debris field. Having remained submerged for 75 years, it has been meticulously conserved to restore its original brilliance. RMST conservation experts believe the bag belonged to one of Titanic’s pursers, who was responsible for safeguarding passengers’ valuables during the ill-fated voyage. Unfortunately, the pursuer’s intention to return these items after the evacuation was never realized.
Insights from the Recovery Expedition
“The recovery of this exquisite diamond ring is a significant milestone in the exploration of the Titanic,” said Tomasina Ray, President and Director of Collections at RMST. “It embodies the elegance of the Edwardian Era and the personal narratives that continue to link us to the Titanic’s legacy.”
The ring’s recovery was part of a larger operation that utilized the submersible Nautile. The RMST team successfully lifted the bag from the ocean floor, unveiling a trove of jewelry and personal effects that had been preserved since the ship sank in 1912. This remarkable event was also featured in the 1987 television special “Return to the Titanic,” hosted by Telly Savalas.
Today, the diamond ring joins a vast collection of authentic artifacts at the TITANIC: The Artifact Exhibition, located inside the Luxor Hotel & Casino. Among its many exhibits is the “Big Piece,” a 15-ton section of the ship’s hull. Las Vegas is currently the only venue in the world where this particular diamond ring is on display.
