Crown Point’s Caydon Smith Shines as Top Receiver, Overcomes Injuries

UPDATE: Crown Point’s senior wide receiver Caydon Smith is making headlines as he leads his team into a crucial sectional championship game against Penn this Friday. Once labeled a “little scrawny kid,” Smith has transformed into a standout athlete, contributing significantly to the Bulldogs’ perfect 10-0 record.

With 30 catches for 427 yards and 6 touchdowns, Smith’s performance is critical as the Bulldogs aim for their third consecutive sectional title. Coach Craig Buzea expresses immense pride in Smith’s journey, stating, “He has a chance, if he wants, to play college football somewhere.” This recognition comes after a challenging road that included overcoming injuries and self-doubt.

Four years ago, Buzea recalled Smith as a 5-foot-7, 110-pound eighth grader, unsure if he would ever reach his potential. However, Smith has grown to 5-11 and 165 pounds, proving his coach wrong by dominating the wide receiver position. “It’s really fun to see someone you look at and go, ‘Yeah, he’s a good athlete,’ to really sometimes dominate at our level,” Buzea added.

Smith’s humble attitude sets him apart. “I can’t take a lot of credit for it,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of his teammates and the offensive line in his success. His commitment to team dynamics is echoed by his fellow senior wide receiver Logan Urbaniak, who praised Smith’s selflessness and determination to uplift others while pursuing his goals.

Transitioning from running back to wide receiver due to size constraints, Smith faced additional challenges last season with a double sports hernia. Despite the pain, he persevered without surgery, ultimately opting for a January procedure that sidelined him for only three months.

Returning to the field stronger and faster, Smith has revitalized his game, impressing Buzea with his injury-free performance this season. “This is really the first year he’s been injury-free — knock on wood — and the results have shown,” Buzea stated.

As the Bulldogs prepare for the sectional championship, Smith reflects on his journey and accomplishments. “It’s just amazing to be in this position again,” he said, underscoring his love for the game and camaraderie with teammates. The Bulldogs have a history of close contests, having beaten Penn 35-0 in last year’s sectional final.

Beyond football, Smith is also exploring entrepreneurship with his clothing brand, Cultural Revamp, and dabbling in day trading. “I like the entrepreneurial area,” he noted, but insists his focus remains on his team until graduation.

As game day approaches, all eyes will be on Smith and the Bulldogs as they seek to maintain their undefeated record. With the support of his coaches and teammates, Smith’s resilience serves as an inspiration. “He always has a smile on his face,” Buzea remarked. “He’s a good leader by example.”
