The incident, involving a text from co-owner Brett Dahan, has incited protests and led to a formal apology from the nursery, known as The Garden of Eden Nursery.

The situation unfolded when a 24-year-old Israeli woman, who wished to remain anonymous, applied for a position at the nursery located in Albert Park. She received a rejection text that included comments perceived as hostile and derogatory. The message stated that the role had been filled by “someone with a semblance of humanity” and suggested that she should leave Australia, just weeks after her arrival. The message concluded with politically charged statements, including “Free Palestine and end genocide NOW,” further intensifying the outrage.

The recipient of the message expressed her shock, stating, “I came to Australia believing it was a fair and welcoming country, but reading those words – so full of hostility – was heartbreaking.” She felt judged not on her qualifications, but on her nationality.

In response to the backlash, which included protests organized by members of the Jewish community, The Garden of Eden Nursery issued a public apology. The nursery’s statement expressed regret over the message sent by a staff member and emphasized that the content did not reflect the values of their business. “We are deeply upset and disappointed by the content of the message,” the statement read. The nursery confirmed that the situation is being addressed internally.

Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of the Anti-Defamation Commission in Australia, criticized the nursery’s response. He argued that true accountability would require more than a public apology, calling for the closure of the business, stating, “Mr. Dahan’s repugnant text wasn’t a slip. It was a deliberate, written act meant to humiliate and degrade.” He emphasized that the young woman deserves a direct apology from Dahan himself.

The incident raises significant legal questions under the Australian Equal Opportunity Act, which prohibits discrimination based on nationality in employment practices. The widespread response from the community highlights ongoing concerns regarding antisemitism in Australia.
