Mikie Sherrill’s Victory Boosts New Jersey’s Film Industry Future
The recent victory of Democratic candidate Mikie Sherrill in the New Jersey gubernatorial race signals promising prospects for the state’s burgeoning film and television industry. Sherrill defeated Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli by a significant margin, and her administration is expected to prioritize the growth of this vital sector, which is already a major contributor to the state’s economy.
One of Sherrill’s key responsibilities will be overseeing the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), where she will appoint a new leader to replace outgoing CEO Tim Sullivan. Sullivan has garnered praise for his efforts in enhancing the state’s screen-production industry and will depart at the end of 2025. The new appointee will face the challenge of sustaining the momentum created under Sullivan, who has been instrumental in attracting major studios to New Jersey.
New Jersey currently offers some of the most attractive tax incentives in the country for film and television productions, with credits up to 40 percent of qualified expenses. This financial support is crucial for the industry, especially as major projects are already underway. Notably, Netflix is expanding in Monmouth County, and Paramount is developing a site in Bayonne, creating a significant demand for production services.
The president of Screen Alliance New Jersey (SANJ), Nick Day, expressed enthusiasm about Sherrill’s win, emphasizing her commitment to the economic growth of the state and the opportunities within the film industry. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Day highlighted that the industry is projected to generate over $600 million in production spending in 2024. This growth not only creates numerous jobs but also supports a broad spectrum of small businesses that cater to the production sector.
While Day acknowledged that Ciattarelli also showed support for the industry, he believes Sherrill’s approach may lead to a more consistent advancement in policies that benefit filmmakers. “There is bipartisan support for economic growth and job creation, and this industry plays a crucial role in that,” he stated. Sherrill’s administration is expected to continue the initiatives championed by outgoing Governor Phil Murphy, particularly the tax credits that have attracted significant investment from major studios.
Looking ahead, Day envisions a collaborative environment between New Jersey and New York, seeing the two states as partners in establishing a global production hub. He noted, “There might be a little bit of competition, but it’s a friendly one. We are working together to make this region attractive for productions.”
As for the future of New Jersey’s production landscape, Day remains optimistic. With the addition of major facilities like Fort Monmouth for Netflix and the 1888 studio by Paramount, he anticipates an influx of projects that will enhance New Jersey’s reputation as a reliable production location. The state’s infrastructure is evolving, and there are expectations that more industry giants will follow suit in establishing operations in New Jersey.
While the state faces competition from others, including California, Day dismissed concerns about losing business to it. He asserted that New Jersey’s unique incentives and the quality of its workforce will continue to attract filmmakers. “We need to focus on bringing production back to the U.S.,” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of keeping jobs and economic benefits within the country.
As Sherrill prepares to take office, her administration’s approach to the film and television industry will be closely watched. The potential for job creation, economic growth, and a thriving creative sector hinges on her decisions in the coming months. The future looks bright for the Garden State’s film industry, with expectations that it will flourish under Sherrill’s leadership.
