Scripps Research Institute Seeks Innovative Fellows for 2026
The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, is inviting applications for its prestigious Fellow position set to begin in Fall 2026. This program seeks to attract scientists of exceptional promise and creativity who have recently completed their Ph.D. or have up to one year of postdoctoral experience.
Fellows will be integrated into the laboratory of a faculty sponsor, who will provide essential resources, including space and instrumentation, as well as mentorship and guidance throughout the fellowship. Each Fellow will receive full salary support along with funding for two laboratory members over a three-year period. At the end of this term, they will be reviewed for a faculty position either within Scripps Research or another esteemed institution.
Independent Research and Collaborative Opportunities
While pursuing independent research projects, Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with students and postdocs supported by their faculty sponsors. They will hold full Principal Investigator status, granting them the ability to apply for external grants to further expand their research initiatives. This structure is designed to foster a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment, allowing Fellows to benefit from the Institute’s extensive resources and expertise.
Candidates must possess a recently awarded Ph.D., MD, DVM, or an equivalent degree in a relevant field, along with a commendable record of graduate research that showcases originality in addressing significant scientific questions. Successful applicants are expected to establish an active research group, engage with faculty members, and contribute to interdisciplinary research and training.
Applications will undergo review by an interdisciplinary Search Committee composed of representatives from various scientific disciplines. The first round of reviews will focus on applications submitted by December 31, 2025, but applications will be accepted until the position is filled or until the close of May 2026.
Application Process and Expectations
Interested candidates will need to provide letters of recommendation from three referees, along with a personal statement outlining their career goals, relevant experience, and anticipated contributions to the objectives of the Scripps Research Fellows Program.
Historically, successful Scripps Research Fellows have emerged as competitive candidates for faculty positions nationally, although many have chosen to continue their careers within the Institute itself. This reflects the program’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering independent scientific careers.
The Scripps Research Institute remains a cornerstone of innovation in the scientific community, emphasizing the importance of creativity and collaboration in research. This Fellowship program signifies a continued investment in the future of science, attracting the brightest minds to advance knowledge and discovery.
