Kurtis David Harder Unveils Chilling Sequel “Influencers”
Kurtis David Harder, a veteran in the horror genre, is set to release his latest film, Influencers, on December 12, 2023, through the streaming service Shudder. This sequel follows the success of his 2023 horror thriller Influencer and continues to explore the unsettling intersections of social media and psychological turmoil.
The film is described as a contemporary psychological thriller that leverages classic horror tropes, including intense scares and unexpected twists. “Horror is a great platform to dive into the darker sides of society,” Harder stated during a screening at the Whistler Film Festival. His focus on the consequences of technology and social media reflects a growing concern about the impact of harmful online content, particularly on young audiences.
In Influencers, the narrative centers around CW, portrayed by Cassandra Naud, whose seemingly perfect life with her girlfriend, played by Lisa Delamar, unravels when they encounter a popular British influencer, Charlotte, played by Georgina Campbell, and a toxic YouTuber, Jacob, portrayed by Jonathan Whitesell. The film presents a chilling exploration of identity theft and the moral decay that can stem from online obsessions, pushing its characters into violent confrontations.
Harder aims to create a film that resonates with modern audiences by addressing contemporary issues such as artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. He noted that the conversation surrounding these themes has evolved significantly since the release of Influencer two years ago. “With these two movies, we’re definitely exploring a very contemporary online world,” he explained, alluding to the film’s examination of social media algorithms and their psychological ramifications.
The director also emphasized his intention to break away from traditional indie filmmaking constraints. While many filmmakers are advised to keep their productions contained to single locations, Harder chose to film in picturesque settings across Europe and Asia. This decision not only enhances the visual appeal of Influencers but also provides a travel-themed backdrop for the horror narrative.
To maintain the production’s agility, Harder worked with a smaller crew, allowing for a more flexible filming process. “If you were to bring a 50-person crew, you’d have so much infrastructure that you’re moving to each location. Whereas when we’re filming movies like these two, we’re going to a different location almost every day,” he explained. This logistical strategy is crucial in executing the film’s ambitious vision without succumbing to production challenges.
As the horror genre continues to evolve, Harder’s work exemplifies its potential to reflect societal anxieties. His commitment to exploring the darker facets of human behavior through thrilling narratives positions Influencers as a relevant and engaging addition to contemporary cinema. With the film’s release on the horizon, audiences can expect a gripping commentary on the complexities of modern life wrapped in a captivating horror experience.
