The absence of Lucas Bravo as Gabriel in most episodes of Emily in Paris season 5 has sparked discussions among fans and critics alike. Darren Star, the series creator, addressed this absence, stating that the season has “the right amount” of Gabriel, despite Bravo’s limited screen time. In an interview with Decider on December 19, 2024, Star explained that the storyline for this season did not center around the character of Gabriel but rather followed the journey of the main character, Emily.

Star clarified that the decision not to feature Gabriel prominently was part of the overall narrative direction for the season. “The storyline wasn’t about Emily and Gabriel,” he said. Despite this, he acknowledged the importance of Bravo’s character within the series. The latest season, which began streaming on December 18, 2024, briefly shows Gabriel visiting Rome before returning to Paris, where he accepts a job that takes him away from the city. His interactions with Emily reflect a complicated history, culminating in a cliffhanger that leaves viewers questioning the future of their relationship.

Director and executive producer Andrew Fleming provided further insight into Bravo’s limited appearances, stating that the actor had other commitments, specifically a film project. “He did have a commitment. He had a movie that he was doing,” Fleming noted, explaining that the production team adjusted the storyline around Bravo’s availability.

In the season finale, audiences witness Gabriel writing a letter to Emily, inviting her to visit him in Greece. This moment leaves fans eager to see how their relationship will evolve in future seasons. Fleming emphasized the unique chemistry between Bravo and Lily Collins, who plays Emily, stating, “When he and Emily are in a scene together, something undefinable happens.”

Bravo’s reduced role in the series follows his previous comments about Gabriel’s character arc. In an interview with IndieWire in October 2024, he expressed dissatisfaction with the direction taken by the writers. “The ‘sexy chef’ was very much part of me in season 1, and we grew apart season after season because of the choices he makes,” Bravo said. He criticized the portrayal of Gabriel, describing how he felt his character had lost the charm that initially drew him to the role.

“I really grew apart from him,” Bravo remarked, highlighting his disappointment with Gabriel’s evolution into a more melancholic character. He expressed frustration about the limitations placed on actors in terms of script changes, stating, “There is only so much I can do in the limits of a script.” He also indicated uncertainty about his continuation in the series, noting, “It makes me question if I want to be part of season 5.”

Before the season aired, sources indicated that Bravo would still be part of the show but would not have as significant a role as in previous seasons. This shift has led to speculation about the character’s future and the potential for a return to form.

The mixed responses from fans and Bravo’s own reflections on his character highlight the ongoing evolution of Emily in Paris as it navigates the complexities of character development and audience expectations. As the series progresses, viewers are left contemplating whether Gabriel will reclaim his original spark or continue on a different path.
