Dr. William Chey Takes Helm as ACG President for 2025-2026
Dr. William D. Chey has been elected as the President of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) for the term 2025-2026. He officially assumed this role during the ACG’s Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course held this week in Phoenix, AZ. Dr. Chey, a renowned gastroenterologist, brings extensive experience to the position, representing an organization that advocates for over 20,000 members across the globe.
Dr. Chey serves as the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan and has a joint appointment as a Professor of Nutrition Sciences. He became Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology in 2022, where he focuses on disorders related to gut-brain interaction and H. pylori infections. His prolific contributions to the field include over 500 peer-reviewed publications and authorship of numerous clinical practice guidelines.
In his new role, Dr. Chey will lead the ACG Board of Trustees, guiding initiatives that align with the College’s mission to enhance digestive health. His responsibilities will encompass overseeing continuing medical education and addressing health policy issues, among other vital programs.
Dr. Chey has held various leadership positions in national and international gastroenterology societies. He is a former Council member of the American Neurogastroenterology & Motility Society and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Rome Foundation and as Vice President of the International Foundation of GI Disorders.
Having been an ACG member since 1993, Dr. Chey joined the ACG Board of Trustees in 2010 and achieved the Master of the ACG (MACG) designation in 2025. His involvement with the organization includes significant contributions to various committees such as Educational Affairs, Finance and Budget, and Practice Parameters.
Dr. Chey has received numerous accolades, including invitations to deliver prestigious lectures at ACG events and the ACG Berk-Fise Award in 2020. His commitment to mentoring is evident, having guided more than 70 students, residents, and fellows, many of whom have become influential figures in the field of gastroenterology.
