The halls of North Rockford Middle School will feel an absence following the retirement of Chillie, a 10-year-old yellow Labrador and the school’s first counseling dog. After nearly seven years of service, Chillie officially retired on November 25, 2023, due to health challenges, according to her handler, Angie Hughes, who is also a school counselor. While Chillie will continue to visit, her full-time role has come to an end.

Students bid farewell to Chillie with a mini parade that saw the entire school lining the halls to pay their respects. Messages of gratitude adorned the walls, and the high school’s Beyond the Rock broadcasting team created a tribute video to honor her contributions to the school community. Chillie has not only been a source of joy but also a vital mental health resource for students.

In reflecting on Chillie’s impact, Hughes noted, “In middle school, kids feel constantly judged… Chillie doesn’t care what kids wear, the brand of shoes they have, what they look like — she just unconditionally loves them, and that provides safety for kids.”

Chillie’s Legacy in the Classroom

As students prepared to say goodbye, eighth-graders Theo Walla, Greyson Walker, and Emmett Setlock shared their personal experiences with Chillie. Theo recounted instances of bullying that led to anxiety about attending school. Chillie’s presence made a significant difference, providing comfort during challenging days. “Seeing Chillie at the start of the day makes me feel a little bit more happy to be in school,” he explained.

Greyson reflected on how Chillie helped him manage behavioral issues, stating, “She just cheered me up even though I got really down and sad.” For Emmett, Chillie alleviated academic stress. He remarked, “When I’d see Chillie, she just kind of looked at me and gave me a sense of, like, ‘You’ve got this.’”

Though the students expressed sadness over Chillie’s retirement, they recognized it was time for her to rest. Emmett articulated the mixed emotions, stating, “I can manage, but it’s going to be hard. It’s just going to feel a bit different that Chillie’s not going to be here anymore.”

The Impact of Therapy Dogs in Schools

The initiative to introduce therapy dogs into the school began several years ago, driven by research highlighting the benefits of canine companions in educational settings. Hughes emphasized the positive impact of therapy dogs, noting that studies indicate they can lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and assist reluctant readers.

Chillie, trained by Paws with a Cause, arrived at North Rockford Middle School in 2019, supported by a grant from the Rockford Education Foundation. She quickly proved to be an invaluable asset, helping students calm down during distressing moments. Hughes observed that students who once required significant time to regain composure could return to class much more quickly when Chillie was present.

On average, Chillie welcomed between 40 to 45 visits daily, which equates to over 3,600 visits per year, not including casual encounters in the hallways. While her absence will be deeply felt, Hughes believes the students understand the necessity of Chillie’s retirement and have had ample opportunities to express their goodbyes.

While plans are underway for a new therapy dog to join North Rockford Middle School by the end of the academic year, Chillie’s legacy as the first member of the school’s “Ram Pack” will endure. Hughes concluded, “I can’t imagine a better dog setting that precedent. She’s been the biggest blessing to our school.”
