The Angelina and Neches River Railroad celebrated its 125th anniversary on March 5, 2024, with a community gathering at its offices on Spence Street. The Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce organized a “red carpet salute” to honor the railroad’s long-standing service to the region.

Chamber diplomat Cynthia Bluethman welcomed attendees and remarked on the pleasant weather. The event featured several notable presentations. Melinda Kartye, representing Congressman Pete Sessions, presented railroad president David Perkins with a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol. Although Sessions could not attend due to commitments in Washington, D.C., Kartye read a proclamation in his absence.

Additionally, Linda Parker from State Representative Trent Ashby’s office presented Perkins with a Texas flag that had been flown over the Texas State Capitol. The executive director of the Texas Forest Country Partnership, Tanya Dora, read a letter from Senator John Cornyn, acknowledging the railroad’s historical significance.

Following these presentations, Perkins addressed the audience. He expressed gratitude for the community’s support and acknowledged the presence of elected officials. “We wouldn’t be standing here without our shareholders,” Perkins stated, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder investment in the railroad’s success. He reflected on the railroad’s heritage as the last remnant of a family-owned business and highlighted its enduring commitment to cost-effective transportation.

Perkins credited the railroad’s founders — Simon Henderson, Joseph Kurth, and brothers Eli and Sam Wiener — for their vision of progress and economic growth. “We are proud to partner with local businesses, major corporations, and Union Pacific today,” he said. Perkins concluded by looking forward to many more years of service on the tracks, reinforcing the railroad’s role as a vital transportation link for the community.

This celebration of the Angelina and Neches River Railroad not only marks a significant milestone but also reaffirms the organization’s commitment to serving the region for years to come.
