Picasso’s Hidden Portrait of Dora Maar Fetches €32 Million at Auction
A long-hidden portrait by Pablo Picasso, featuring his muse Dora Maar, has sold for an impressive €32 million at an auction in Paris. This striking artwork, titled “Bust of a Woman with a Flowered Hat (Dora Maar),” had remained tucked away from public view for over eighty years, residing in a family collection until its recent sale.
Auctioneer Christophe Lucien described the sale, which took place on Friday, as “an enormous success,” highlighting the excitement surrounding the piece. Created in July 1943, the portrait captures Maar adorned in a vibrant floral hat, showcasing Picasso’s distinctive style during a tumultuous period in their relationship. The couple had been involved for around seven years, but by the time the painting was completed, their bond was nearing a painful end.
The artwork was originally purchased in 1944 and had not been available on the market since then. Its return generated significant interest among collectors, demonstrating the enduring appeal of both Picasso’s work and the enigmatic figure of Maar.
The auction has not only highlighted the value of art but also the storied history behind such masterpieces. Picasso’s relationship with Maar was complex, filled with both inspiration and struggle, which adds layers of meaning to this particular portrait. The sale underscores the ongoing fascination with 20th-century art and the powerful narratives that accompany iconic pieces.
As the art world continues to evolve, this sale marks a notable moment, reflecting both the high demand for significant works and the stories they tell.
