MIAA Lacrosse Rivals Commit to Virginia Military Institute
Two standout lacrosse players from the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) have announced their commitment to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). On December 8, 2023, attackman Luca Ball from Loyola Blakefield and defenseman Jake Van Metre of John Carroll, both teammates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), declared their intent to join the Keydets’ lacrosse program.
This dual commitment marks a significant moment, as it is relatively uncommon for multiple players from the same graduating class to make such an announcement on the same day. VMI has been gaining attention for its improvement in lacrosse performance. After finishing with a record of 1-10 in 2021, the Keydets have steadily increased their win total each season, culminating in an impressive 10-4 record in 2025, the program’s best performance since 1988.
The rise of VMI lacrosse can be attributed to the efforts of Coach James Purpura and the recent recruitment strategies under new head coach Taylor Mendoza. Coach Mendoza, who previously served as an assistant at Washington & Lee University, is familiar with the MIAA talent pool, having recruited several players from the region during his tenure. His leadership is expected to enhance VMI’s competitive edge as the program aims for a spot in the Northeast Conference Tournament and eventually the NCAA Tournament.
Both players expressed strong motivations behind their decisions. Luca Ball emphasized that VMI would provide him with an environment conducive to personal and athletic growth. He stated, “I believe this institution will give me the best chance to succeed in college while being surrounded by people who can help me grow.” He also highlighted the invaluable life lessons and experiences he anticipates gaining from the program, thanking his coaches at Loyola Blakefield for their guidance throughout the recruiting process.
Jake Van Metre echoed similar sentiments, noting his desire for academic and athletic challenges at VMI. His confidence in Coach Mendoza significantly influenced his choice, alongside a commitment to serve the country post-graduation.
With both players joining the Keydets, the future looks promising for VMI lacrosse. Their addition to the roster signifies a strong recruiting pipeline and a commitment to elevating the program’s status in collegiate lacrosse. The combination of talented athletes and experienced coaching could lead to a transformative period for both the Keydets and their respective MIAA programs.
As Luca Ball and Jake Van Metre embark on this new chapter, the lacrosse community will be watching closely to see how their contributions play a role in shaping the future of VMI lacrosse.
