URGENT UPDATE: Attendance at Aurora’s Christkindlmarket has surged by 20% during favorable weather conditions, but overall numbers remain down this season. Maren Priebe, CEO of German American Events, confirmed to The Beacon-News that despite a record-breaking snowfall this year, the holiday market at RiverEdge Park is seeing a significant uptick in visitors as it approaches its final days leading up to Christmas Eve on December 24, 2023.

The market, which opened on November 21, is now operating daily, and Priebe noted that the first week attracted about 275,000 visitors last year. With the potential for up to 350,000 attendees this year, barring severe weather, the Christkindlmarket’s success hinges on changing conditions. “If we had had standard holiday weather, attendance would likely have stayed up,” Priebe said.

The unusual weather patterns have led to what officials call the “quickest start to winter” since 1978. Notably, a recent Saturday in November shattered a snowfall record set in 1951. Priebe expressed optimism that as temperatures warm leading into Christmas, attendance will rebound. “Weather significantly impacts turnout,” she emphasized.

In addition to crowd engagement, the Aurora market has been bolstered by a growing reputation as a family tradition, attracting repeat visitors. Priebe credits this increase to the market’s larger size, convenient location near a Metra station, and ample free parking. She stated, “The people of Aurora have been so inviting, and it’s been a pleasure to work with them.”

This year’s Christkindlmarket has also expanded, featuring nearly 70 vendors, up from 55 in previous years. Enhancements at RiverEdge Park include new facilities and room for growth, contributing to a festive atmosphere. From handcrafted ornaments to delicious German food, long lines for popular booths add to the vibrant environment.

New attractions this year include a gingerbread man scavenger hunt, where visitors can win prizes by finding various gingerbread figures scattered throughout the market. Priebe noted that the market has also added glass-blowing classes and a new collectible beer stein.

As the holiday season progresses, Priebe urges visitors to arrive quickly to secure limited-edition collectible cups, stating, “Good news travels fast. We want everyone to experience the joy of the market.”

With attendance fluctuations influenced by unpredictable weather, the next few days are critical for the Christkindlmarket in Aurora. As community members and visitors gather for festive cheer, the market remains a symbol of resilience and celebration, poised for a strong finish to the holiday season.
