UPDATE: In an urgent bid to salvage the Dallas Cowboys’ dismal 2025 season, defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus has announced a critical change. He will move from the sidelines to the coach’s booth for this Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

This decision, confirmed just hours ago, comes after the front office failed to express confidence in Eberflus during recent radio interviews. With the Cowboys’ defense ranked near the bottom of the league and just 53 points away from tying the franchise record for the most points allowed in a single season, this move reflects the dire state of the team.

“It’s been a tough season,” Eberflus admitted. “I’m going to get a better perspective from up there in the booth.” This will be Eberflus’ first time calling plays from the booth since his tenure at Missouri nearly 17 years ago.

The Cowboys’ defense has suffered immensely, particularly following the trade of star linebacker Micah Parsons, which significantly weakened their pass rush. Although they acquired Kenny Clark in that trade and Quinnen Williams later, the defense remains in shambles, compounded by injuries to key players like cornerbacks DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs.

Despite leading the NFL with a 30.8% pressure rate, Eberflus’ conservative blitzing strategy—only 25.2% of plays—has drawn criticism. Communication issues among the secondary and linebackers have also plagued the unit, leading to a staggering three games where the Cowboys allowed over 40 points this season.

“We’ve really been good on third down the last five games, but we need to improve our pass defense,” Eberflus stated, emphasizing the ongoing struggles.

The ownership duo of Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones acknowledge the injury challenges but remain perplexed by the defense’s inability to contain opposing quarterbacks. High-profile performances from players like Russell Wilson, who threw for 450 yards, have only amplified frustrations.

As the Cowboys head into the crucial matchup against the Chargers, the pressure intensifies. With only three games remaining this season, this weekend’s performance could determine Eberflus’ future with the team. “Everyone is being evaluated,” Jerry Jones noted, hinting that the outcome may dictate changes for next year.

Fans are left wondering: Can Eberflus turn things around from the booth? If not, what’s next for a struggling franchise? With an urgent need for improvement, the Cowboys’ coaching staff must deliver immediate results or face further scrutiny.

As the game approaches, all eyes will be on Eberflus and the defense. Will this bold move yield the desired results? The countdown to kickoff has begun.
