Los Angeles County Declares State of Emergency Over ICE Raids

URGENT UPDATE: Los Angeles County has officially declared a state of emergency in response to ongoing federal immigration raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following a pivotal vote on October 3, 2023. This decisive action empowers the county to provide essential support to residents affected by these federal actions.
The declaration was introduced by County Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Janice Hahn and passed with a significant 4-1 vote. With over 3 million immigrants residing in Los Angeles, the county officials highlighted that the ICE raids have instigated “widespread fear,” leading to decreased workplace attendance, disruptions in local economies, and increased strain on vital services such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship.
This emergency proclamation facilitates immediate mobilization of resources, enabling the county to request state and federal financial assistance to address the negative impacts of the raids. Among the urgent provisions included are rent relief for tenants struggling financially due to the raids and funding for legal aid and additional services.
“What’s happening in our communities is an emergency — and Los Angeles County is treating it like one,” stated Supervisor Horvath in a press release. “This proclamation is about action and speed — it allows us to move faster, coordinate better, and use every tool available to protect and stabilize our communities.”
Horvath emphasized the harsh reality faced by families living under the constant threat of deportation, stating, “For months, families have lived under threat and workers have been taken from job sites. We will continue to stand with our immigrant neighbors — today, and for as long as it takes.”
The emergency declaration will remain in effect until the county board decides to terminate it, highlighting the seriousness of the current situation. This is a rapidly developing story, and the community is urged to stay informed as further updates emerge.
As the situation unfolds, local residents are encouraged to reach out for assistance and to participate in community support initiatives aimed at helping those affected by these federal actions.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to monitor this urgent situation in Los Angeles County.
