UPDATE: Travelers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) will experience a stunning transformation at Terminal 1 just in time for the holiday rush. The largest interior renovation of the terminal, a monumental $242 million project, has been officially completed, according to the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) and Delta Air Lines.

Renovations began in the fall of 2023, and the results promise to elevate the passenger experience significantly. With Delta holding a commanding 70% passenger market share at MSP, the airline has played a pivotal role in this ambitious project, which includes upgrades across six concourses and 75 Delta gate hold rooms.

“It’s a major transformation of the post-security areas of Terminal 1 that enhances the passenger experience — from the checkpoints to the gate areas,” stated Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC. “Delta has been a tremendous partner in delivering these modern spaces that further boost MSP’s award-winning customer service.”

Among the standout improvements are new terrazzo and carpet flooring, contemporary wall finishes, and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures. The upgrades also feature a complete refresh of Delta’s gate areas, which now include new seating, carpeting, counters, and signage. Notably, the introduction of “dynamic gate signs” will provide travelers with quick access to flight and destination information from farther down the concourse.

These renovations coincide with the final phases of a decade-long Airport Modernization Program, which saw the MAC investing $182.5 million and Delta contributing an additional $60 million. This extensive program has not only modernized the post-security areas but also revamped the pre-security zones, including checkpoints, ticketing, and baggage claim.

Travelers are urged to take advantage of the enhanced facilities as they prepare for increased holiday travel. With these significant upgrades, MSP aims to ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience for all arriving and departing passengers.

Next Steps: As MSP continues to welcome travelers, airport officials recommend checking flight statuses and terminal maps online before heading to the airport. This is an exciting time for MSP, and the newly renovated Terminal 1 is set to make holiday travel more efficient and enjoyable than ever.
