New Metro Transit Route Launches, Cuts Travel Time to Airport by 30 Min
UPDATE: A new Metro Transit bus route has just launched, connecting riders from Washington and Dakota counties directly to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and the Mall of America. The new service, Route 345, began operations on October 15, 2023, marking a significant expansion in public transit options for the southeast metro area.
Officials confirm that Route 345 is designed to provide faster and more reliable travel, slashing commute times between Woodbury and the Mall of America by nearly 30 minutes. This means what once took approximately an hour and a half using previous routes can now be accomplished in under one hour, transforming transit for local residents.
“We are thrilled to announce this expansion,” said Karla Bigham, Washington County District 4 Commissioner. “It’s a big day for the community and the east metro, enhancing access to essential services and jobs.”
Buses on Route 345 will operate hourly from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and connect seamlessly with existing lines, including the Gold Line, Blue Line, and Red Line. This connectivity is crucial for residents, especially those without vehicles or from single-car households.
The introduction of Route 345 is part of the Network Now initiative, a project by the Metropolitan Council aimed at strengthening the regional transit network post-pandemic. Alongside Route 345, Metro Transit has launched two additional routes, 725 and 837, enhancing transit options across the region.
“This route was developed based on extensive transit and ridership data, as well as community feedback,” said Steve Baisden, Metro Transit senior service planner. “We are responding to the needs of our riders, ensuring they have the connections they require.”
The new Route 345 will also restore service to the Newport Transit Station, which had been closed due to low ridership since spring 2020. With the reopening, officials anticipate a significant increase in usage, benefiting the surrounding communities.
“This is more than just a route; it’s about providing new connections that were not available before the pandemic,” Baisden emphasized. “We are adapting to the changing travel patterns of our riders and ensuring they can access jobs and services efficiently.”
In Woodbury, Route 345 stops at Woodlane Station, which also serves as a hub for several other routes, enhancing the overall connectivity for the region.
Looking ahead, Route 345 is projected to connect to the upcoming G Line, set to open in 2028, further expanding transportation options for residents along the Highway 62 and I-494 corridors.
