UPDATE: Niina Petrokina has surged to the top of the leaderboard in her quest to defend her European figure skating title, delivering an impressive performance in the short program on Wednesday in Sheffield, England. With the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics looming, Petrokina’s score of 70.61 points positions her as the frontrunner ahead of the free skate events this week.

After undergoing surgery for an Achilles tendon injury in October, the Estonian skater showcased her resilience with a flawless routine, including a stunning triple lutz-triple toeloop combination. Petrokina’s performance eclipsed her previous personal best from last year’s European Championship, further solidifying her status as a top contender.

Nina Pinzarrone of Belgium, who has secured bronze medals at the last two European Championships, currently trails Petrokina in second place with a score of 64.97 points. Close behind is Italy’s Anna Pezzetta, who finished with 64.85 points. In contrast, reigning European champion Loena Hendrickx of Belgium struggled in fifth place following a fall, highlighting the challenges she has faced during an injury-plagued season.

The competition is fierce, as former champion Anastasiia Gubanova found herself in 11th place after also falling during her routine. With just two days until the women’s free skate on Friday, all eyes will be on Petrokina as she aims to defend her title amid intense pressure.

In the pairs category, Georgia’s Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava are making headlines with their short program score of 75.96 points, putting them in the lead over defending champions Minerva Hase and Nikita Volodin of Germany, who managed 74.81 points. The pairs free skate is set for Thursday, promising more thrilling performances.

This year’s championships are notable as Russian athletes are not competing, although two skaters have qualified for the Olympics under neutral status. The absence of Russian skaters has significantly altered the competitive landscape, making the path to victory more unpredictable.

As the European Championships continue, the excitement builds with the free skate events just around the corner. Stay tuned for the latest updates from Sheffield as these talented athletes vie for glory on the international stage.
