Safeway Shuts Down Hayward Store by Late February 2024
UPDATE: Safeway has confirmed the permanent closure of its grocery store located at 231 Jackson St., Hayward, set for late February 2024. The decision was announced just hours ago, impacting the Jackson Triangle neighborhood where the store has been a staple for years.
The company stated, “We have been proud to serve the Jackson Triangle neighborhood over the years, and this decision was not made lightly.” This closure follows the expiration of the store’s lease, prompting Safeway to reassess its operational strategy in the region.
In a positive note for employees, Safeway confirmed that staff from the Jackson St. location will be transferred to other stores within the area, in accordance with their collective bargaining agreements.
Residents can still shop at the nearby Safeway located at 22280 Foothill Blvd., which will continue to operate. This location offers similar products as the Jackson St. store, along with additional amenities such as a Starbucks kiosk and a pharmacy, ensuring that customers still have access to essential services.
This closure adds to the trend of recent Safeway store shutdowns in the Bay Area, raising concerns about the grocery chain’s future in the region. As community members react to this news, many are left wondering how it will affect local access to grocery services.
What’s Next: Safeway is expected to provide further details regarding the transition of services and employee placements in the coming weeks. Community members are encouraged to stay informed about developments as they unfold.
This urgent update highlights the shifting landscape of retail in the Bay Area, and residents are urged to share their thoughts and concerns about the implications of this closure.
