UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander confirmed that he and his family are safe following a break-in at their home last week. The incident occurred on October 19, 2023, around 7:45 PM while Gilgeous-Alexander was competing in a home game against the Washington Wizards.

“Long story short, everybody’s safe, and that’s all that really matters,” Gilgeous-Alexander stated after the Thunder’s victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. “Everything else will come and go, but my loved ones are safe, so I’m OK. I’m happy.”

Police in Nichols Hills responded to a report of the burglary shortly after it was reported. According to officials, “The suspects fled the area prior to police arrival.” As of now, no arrests have been made, and police report there is no ongoing threat to the public.

While the police have not disclosed whether anyone was home at the time of the break-in or what items were taken, this incident is part of a troubling trend. High-profile athletes across the U.S. have been targeted in similar burglaries, often occurring on game days when they are away from their homes.

Recent victims include NFL stars like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Joe Burrow, as well as NBA star Luka Doncic and NHL player Evgeni Malkin. Law enforcement has noted that thieves often strike during games, leveraging the absence of athletes to access their luxury items.

As investigations continue, the Thunder community is rallying around Gilgeous-Alexander, expressing relief for his family’s safety. Stay tuned for updates as police work to solve this alarming case of burglary targeting athletes.
