Clinton Township’s Chili Cookoff Delights with Unique Flavors
The annual chili cookoff organized by the Father Kramer Knights of Columbus brought together culinary enthusiasts on October 25, 2023, at the Italian American Cultural Center in Clinton Township. This year’s event showcased a “sweet and hot” theme, with five participants presenting their distinctive chili creations that included an array of unique ingredients.
Among the competitors was **Alia Natzke**, who introduced a dessert chili featuring chocolate and cayenne pepper, garnished with whipped cream. Her mother, **Monica Natzke**, contributed a chicken apple chili known for its creamy sweetness complemented by a hint of spice. **Linda Lucas**, another participant, shared a family recipe passed down through generations, highlighting molasses as her secret ingredient. “I put in about four tablespoons for this batch, and it just gives it a good flavor; then I add a can of tomato soup to make it a little creamy,” Lucas explained.
The highlight of the cookoff was **Britnie Williams**, a resident of Clinton Township, whose maple bourbon chili won both the people’s choice award and the judge’s award. More than 50 taste testers participated in the event, sampling the diverse offerings. Williams described her creation as “a little sweet because of the maple syrup, but the heat kind of sneaks up on you. You might want to have a glass of water close by.”
The judging panel included **Judge Steven Bieda** of the **37th District Court**, who has been a judge at the event for the past four years. Bieda noted the variety of recipes that make the competition exciting. “Everyone has such unique and great recipes. No two are the same. It’s hard to choose just one that is the best,” he remarked. He brought his own chili recipe to the judging table, which features two types of chopped peppers and a unique spice blend, although he rarely finds time to make it.
Event organizer **Greg Childs** expressed gratitude to sponsors, including the **Italian American Cultural Society**, **Southeast Michigan Chamber of Commerce**, **Elite Ink** in Center Line, and **Duacare**. Proceeds from the cookoff will benefit the Knights of Columbus charities. “It was a great turnout and a good time was had by all,” Childs stated, reflecting the festive atmosphere of the event.
The chili cookoff not only showcased culinary talent but also fostered community spirit, bringing together residents to enjoy flavorful dishes and support local charities. As the event concluded, participants and attendees alike left with smiles and satisfied palates, eagerly anticipating next year’s competition.
