Samsung Unveils Galaxy XR: Half the Price of Vision Pro, Available Now
UPDATE: Samsung has just launched the highly anticipated Galaxy XR, a groundbreaking device that competes directly with Apple’s Vision Pro at nearly half the price. Priced at $1,799.99, the Galaxy XR is available for purchase right now and comes with over $1,000 in enticing freebies, making it a compelling option for tech enthusiasts.
This launch is significant as it marks Samsung’s entry into the immersive tech ecosystem, powered by Android XR and the cutting-edge Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset. During an exclusive preview event in New York City, I experienced the device first-hand and found it to be impressive, albeit with some practical limitations.
“With Galaxy XR, Samsung is introducing a brand-new ecosystem of mobile devices,” said Won-Joon Choi, Chief Operating Officer of Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics.
The Galaxy XR aims to redefine mobile AI and immersive experiences, allowing users to transition from concept to reality in their everyday lives. However, some features, such as the immersive map demo for finding pizza, raised questions about practicality. While the experience is visually stunning, it may not replace the convenience of simply using a smartphone.
One standout feature is the ability for any YouTube creator to enable 3D spatial video, automatically transforming content into an immersive experience. During my demo, exploring 3D images of homes through Zillow was particularly exciting, showcasing the potential of the device.
Despite its technological advancements, wearing the Galaxy XR for an extended period raised comfort concerns. After a 30-minute session, it felt slightly front-heavy, making me question the feasibility of long-term use. However, the pass-through video quality allows for interaction with surroundings without significant lag, a notable achievement for immersive technology.
At $3,499, Apple’s Vision Pro is considerably more expensive, making the Galaxy XR’s price tag far more attractive. The device also comes bundled with enticing offers such as a year of AI Pro, YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, and access to NFL PRO ERA and other services, enhancing its overall value.
If you consider yourself an early adopter or a tech enthusiast, the Galaxy XR presents an intriguing option. With its launch today, the device is poised to capture the interest of those looking to delve into the world of immersive technology. As Samsung continues to innovate, the Galaxy XR could pave the way for future advancements in this space.
Stay tuned for more updates as Samsung evolves its offerings and the immersive technology landscape continues to expand.
