Thunder Star Jalen Williams OUT for Season Opener vs. Rockets
UPDATE: Oklahoma City Thunder forward Jalen Williams has been ruled out of the defending champions’ season opener against the Houston Rockets on Tuesday night. This decision comes as he continues to recover from offseason surgery on his right wrist.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault has not provided a specific timeline for Williams’ return, only stating that he is “progressing” and “right on schedule.” The decision is critical for the Thunder as they aim to kick off their season strong.
Williams, a key player who was named a third-team All-NBA and second-team All-Defensive selection last season, underwent surgery after tearing the scapholunate ligament in his wrist on April 9. He delayed the procedure to continue contributing during Oklahoma City’s championship run, requiring nearly 30 pain-killing injections during the playoffs.
In the NBA Finals, Williams showcased his talent, averaging 21.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, highlighted by a stunning 40-point performance in Game 5. Reflecting on his sacrifices, Williams stated, “It was a necessary evil to win. I would’ve cut my hand off to win a championship.”
After signing a maximum extension of his rookie contract with supermax escalators this summer, Williams acknowledged the challenges of recovery. He underwent surgery in early July and did not resume shooting with his right hand until this month, complicating his return.
Williams has not committed to a specific timetable for his return, saying, “Just whenever I feel like I can be a hundred percent, then I’ll rock out.” He emphasized the importance of regaining his shooting feel as part of his recovery process.
The Thunder will need to adjust their strategy without one of their star players as they face the Rockets. Fans and analysts are keenly watching how this development will impact Oklahoma City’s quest to defend their title. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Williams’ recovery and return to the court.
