Vulcan Elements, a startup specializing in rare-earth magnets and backed by Donald Trump Jr.’s venture capital firm 1789 Capital, has secured a significant contract valued at $620 million from the U.S. Department of Defense. This milestone is part of a broader $1.4 billion initiative in collaboration with the U.S. Government and ReElement Technologies aimed at enhancing the domestic supply of magnets essential for various defense applications.

The Financial Times reported that this contract represents the largest ever awarded by the Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital. Trump Jr. became a partner at 1789 Capital in 2024, with the firm investing in Vulcan Elements approximately three months ago, according to information from Bloomberg.

In August 2023, Vulcan announced a successful $65 million Series A funding round led by Altimeter Capital. This recent government contract further solidifies the firm’s position in the defense sector, as at least four companies associated with 1789 Capital have received government contracts this year.

The firm has also invested in prominent technology companies like SpaceX and Anduril, both of which are established suppliers to the government. Despite the prominent ties to Trump Jr., Vulcan Elements has publicly stated that he did not participate in the contract negotiations. A spokesperson for Trump Jr. reiterated this, emphasizing that he “had no involvement in negotiations with the government on behalf of 1789’s portfolio companies.”

These developments highlight a growing trend where private companies are increasingly engaging in contracts with the government, particularly in sectors deemed vital for national security. As the U.S. seeks to bolster its supply chains for critical materials, the role of startups like Vulcan Elements becomes essential in navigating the challenges posed by geopolitical tensions and supply chain vulnerabilities.

This substantial government contract not only marks a crucial victory for Vulcan Elements but also raises questions about the intersection of business and politics in the defense industry, particularly regarding how venture capital influences government procurement processes.
