MacKenzie Scott Donates $7.1 Billion to Nonprofits in 2025

Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott has announced a remarkable commitment of $7.1 billion to various nonprofits in 2025. This marks a significant increase in her annual donations, following contributions of $2.6 billion in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023. Scott detailed her philanthropic efforts in an essay on her website, emphasizing that while the dollar figures may capture headlines, they represent a small portion of the broader expressions of care within communities.

Since 2019, Scott has contributed a staggering total of $26.3 billion to charitable organizations. Her donations have garnered significant attention for their size and the absence of restrictions typically associated with such funding, allowing recipients to allocate the funds as they see fit. According to Forbes, Scott’s net worth stands at approximately $33 billion, largely attributed to her shares in Amazon, which she received following her divorce from company founder Jeff Bezos.

Impact on Education and Equity

Notably, over a dozen historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) recently disclosed that they collectively received $783 million from Scott this year alone. This information was revealed through research conducted by Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University and an expert on HBCUs. Gasman praised Scott, stating, “One of the things that I really admire about MacKenzie Scott is that she is like an equity machine,” particularly during a time when educational equity initiatives face challenges.

While some institutions that previously received funding did not get additional gifts this time, the donations included first-time recipients as well. In total, Gasman has tracked $1.35 billion in donations from Scott to HBCUs since 2020. Additionally, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) received $70 million to support a collective endowment for participating HBCUs, and another $50 million was allocated to the Native Forward Scholars Fund, which offers scholarships to Native American students.

Scott’s approach to philanthropy diverges from traditional methods where foundations typically direct grants toward specific programs and require detailed updates from recipients. Instead, she does not impose such conditions on her grantees, allowing them to use the funds without reporting back on their expenditures.

Research from the Center for Effective Philanthropy in 2023 indicated that most recipients of Scott’s funding have effectively managed their grants without experiencing significant difficulties. Kim Mazzuca, the CEO of the nonprofit 10,000 Degrees, expressed her astonishment upon receiving a first-time donation of $42 million from Scott earlier this year. Mazzuca remarked, “I was filled with such joy. I was speechless,” highlighting the profound impact such a gift can have on an organization’s ability to support low-income students.

10,000 Degrees focuses on providing scholarships and mentoring to help students graduate without incurring debt. Mazzuca noted that Scott’s contribution will enable the organization to expand its reach, test new technological tools, and establish an endowment. She emphasized Scott’s thoughtful and heartfelt approach to giving, stating, “She’s providing these financial means as a tool for people to recognize they are who they’ve been waiting for,” referencing a Hopi Tribe prophecy.

In an essay posted in October, Scott encouraged individuals to recognize their potential to influence the world around them. Her reflections on generosity and kindness underscore the ripple effects of support within communities, drawing from her own experiences of receiving help during her college years.
