Senator Critiques GOP’s Stance on Gun Control After Brown Shooting

A shooting incident at Brown University on March 9, 2024, resulted in the tragic deaths of two students and left nine others critically injured. In response to the violence, police have apprehended a person of interest connected to the case. A vigil is planned for the victims on the evening of March 10, fostering community support in the wake of this tragedy.

During an interview on the weekend show “White House: Weekend” on MS NOW, Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) expressed his concerns about the Republican Party’s reluctance to support gun control measures. Reed emphasized the urgent need for bipartisan cooperation to address gun violence, stating, “We’re going to have to roll up our sleeves and get back in the fight, literally.”

Reed pointed out that while some Republicans may be sympathetic to gun control, there exists a significant aversion within the party towards any form of regulation. He attributed part of this resistance to the influence of the gun lobby, which he described as “well-financed and entrenched.”

The senator noted cultural factors that contribute to the ongoing debate over gun rights in the United States. “There are cultural issues here,” Reed explained. “We all remember the western movies where everybody had a gun. And there are many parts of the United States, including even parts of New England, where having a weapon is something that they feel is a right that they must have, and they vigorously defend it.”

Reed’s comments reflect a broader struggle to convince constituents about the benefits of gun safety measures. He asserted that advocating for responsible gun ownership does not equate to restricting access for legitimate purposes, such as hunting or sport shooting. “We’re trying to convince people that for their good, for their safety, the safety of their children, without restricting access to firearms… we are going to make sure people are safer,” he said. “It’s a long struggle.”
