New Grocery Store to Open in Historic Carrollton Downtown
A new grocery store is set to enhance the retail landscape of historic downtown Carrollton, Texas. The Street Corner Urban Market, a small chain based in Topeka, Kansas, will occupy a former vintage store located at 1105 South Broadway St., with plans to open in spring 2026. This expansion marks the brand’s entry into the Texas market, as it operates 47 locations across the United States, including cities like Fresno, California and Rochester, New York.
The upcoming Carrollton location will span 2,500 square feet, strategically positioned between a convenience store and a larger grocery outlet. Franchisee Leon Smith, a resident of downtown Carrollton for over seven years, is spearheading this project in response to a clear demand for grocery services in the area.
“I’ve always noticed the need for some type of grocery chain down here,” Smith stated. “There’s just nothing down here for the residents — nowhere for them to go grab something quick.” The historic downtown area boasts various amenities, including family housing, luxury apartments, a DART station, dining options, parks, and locally-owned retail and beauty services. The addition of Street Corner Urban Market aims to fill the gap for essential grocery items such as produce, flowers, beer and wine, and ready-to-eat meals.
Smith, who works as an HR professional at Baylor Scott & White, emphasizes a community-focused approach to the store’s offerings. The shopping experience is designed to mirror that of Trader Joe’s, featuring similar vendors but tailored to fit the local market. “It’s not cookie cutter ‘this is the only way that it’s going to go,’” he explained. “I’m here to try to make it welcoming for everybody that’s around here. I’m a part of this community, so this is important to me, because I know the need for it.”
Residents of Carrollton can expect an inviting atmosphere that prioritizes local preferences and product recommendations. The project reflects a significant step towards addressing the needs of the community, making it easier for residents to access essential items without the hassle of traveling far. As the opening date approaches, excitement builds for what this new grocery store will bring to the neighborhood.
