Phil X, the acclaimed guitarist for Bon Jovi since 2013, has a rich history as a sought-after session musician. His collaborations span a wide array of iconic artists, including the likes of Chris Cornell, Alice Cooper, and Richie Sambora. Recently, during a break from rehearsals with Bon Jovi and ahead of a tour with Triumph, Phil X shared insights into his experiences with these rock legends.

Reflecting on his career, Phil X noted that his work with Rob Zombie and Chris Daughtry significantly boosted his profile in the industry. “Daughtry led to a lot of people calling me for sessions,” he explained. Over the years, he has met numerous influential musicians, all of whom have left an indelible mark on his career.

Memorable Moments with Iconic Musicians

Phil X recounted a particularly memorable session with Chris Cornell. “I got a call from producer Howard Benson saying, ‘We’re recording a track with Chris Cornell,’” he shared. Initially, he thought he missed the chance to meet the legendary singer when he arrived at the studio and Cornell was absent. However, an opportunity arose the next day, leading to a collaborative effort on the song “Long Gone (Rock Version).”

During the recording, Phil X showcased his unique style by using a technique he referred to as “bouzouki tuning.” This approach, rooted in his Greek musical upbringing, creates a distinctive sound that blends elements of rock and traditional music. “When I’m recording, I act like I’m onstage, and everybody in the room is the audience,” he stated, emphasizing his energetic approach to music.

Phil X’s humor and charisma were also on display during this session. After performing a solo, he lightened the mood with a quip about the sound quality, successfully breaking the ice with Cornell. “The whole room exploded with laughter,” he recalled, illustrating the camaraderie in the studio.

Another notable collaboration featured Orianthi, who sought Phil X’s expertise for her album. “She loves what you did on the Daughtry record,” Howard Benson told him, leading to a productive studio experience where Phil X provided solos while Orianthi handled rhythm guitars. He observed, “It was funny to watch her record. I’d think, Wow. She’s good! But when we went into record mode, she got all nervous.”

Phil X’s experience with Alice Cooper was equally memorable. After being recommended by Rob Zombie, he received a call from producer Bob Marlette to record for Cooper’s album *Brutal Planet*. “Bob wanted to intimidate me to see what I was made of,” Phil X recalled, adding humor to the pressure of delivering a standout performance. His creative approach, which included using a screwdriver to manipulate guitar strings, demonstrated his innovative spirit.

Shared History and Friendship with Richie Sambora

Phil X’s relationship with Richie Sambora has evolved over time. Initially viewed as a contentious connection—given Phil X replaced Sambora in Bon Jovi—Phil X emphasized their mutual respect. “We played at a fundraiser for the first responders to the L.A. fires in early 2025, and people were surprised we were friends,” he noted, dispelling any misconceptions about their rapport.

Their first meeting took place during Bon Jovi’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2018. Phil X expressed admiration for Sambora’s iconic guitar solos and the importance of preserving the essence of Bon Jovi’s music while contributing his own style. “It’s about respecting the band and the player, as well as the fans,” he stated.

Phil X also reminisced about his recent interaction with Rik Emmett, the guitarist and vocalist of Triumph. The two musicians reunited for a performance at an NHL playoff game in Edmonton, where they played several classics. “The crowd went nuts, and we thought, ‘Wow, maybe we should keep doing this,’” he shared. This encounter sparked excitement for their upcoming 50th-anniversary tour.

As Phil X continues to balance his role with Bon Jovi and his collaborations with other artists, he remains grateful for the experiences that have shaped his career. His passion for music and the joy of performing with such legendary figures highlight the vibrant life he leads as a musician.

In conclusion, Phil X’s journey through the rock music landscape, filled with notable collaborations and friendships, showcases not only his talent but also the sense of community and support within the industry. As he looks forward to future projects, his enthusiasm for music and the connections he has made will undoubtedly continue to inspire both him and his audience.
