Nicki Minaj Calls Trump and Vance ‘Role Models’ at AmericaFest
In a surprising turn of events, rapper Nicki Minaj made a notable appearance at the Turning Point USA AmericaFest event in Arizona on December 17, 2023. During her speech, she expressed admiration for former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, referring to them as “role models” for young men. This shift in her political stance has garnered significant attention, especially considering her previous criticisms of Trump.
A Shifting Political Landscape
Minaj was interviewed on stage by Erika Kirk, the widow of late activist Charlie Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA. The discussion touched on Minaj’s newfound support for Trump, a figure she had openly condemned in the past. Observers noted that her alignment with the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement marks a significant change in her political identity, which has often been difficult to categorize.
While addressing the audience, Minaj did not shy away from political jabs, referring to California Governor Gavin Newsom as “New-scum,” a nickname Trump previously assigned. She remarked on the character of the current administration, stating, “This administration is full of people with heart and soul, and they make me proud of them. Our vice president, he makes me … well, I love both of them.”
Despite the enthusiastic atmosphere, an unexpected moment arose when Minaj, while praising Vance’s political capabilities, described him as an “assassin.” She quickly appeared to regret her choice of words, prompting Kirk to momentarily wipe away a tear. The crowd reacted with murmurs, but Kirk supported Minaj’s sentiment, asserting, “If the internet wants to clip it, who cares? I love this woman.”
Advocacy and Controversy
Minaj’s recent political engagement extends beyond mere endorsements. Last month, she shared a post from Trump on his Truth Social network, highlighting potential sanctions against Nigeria due to the government’s failure to address violence against Christians. In a post on X, she expressed gratitude for the freedoms enjoyed in the United States, stating, “Reading this made me feel a deep sense of gratitude. We live in a country where we can freely worship God.”
Her remarks at the U.S. mission to the United Nations, where she spoke alongside U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and faith leaders, further solidified her role in advocating for religious freedoms. Minaj voiced her frustration with the backlash from the entertainment industry, emphasizing, “I didn’t notice. We don’t even think about them.”
Kirk praised Minaj for her courage in expressing her views, reinforcing a sense of community among attendees who identify with conservative values. “We don’t have time to. We’re too busy building, right?” Kirk said, to which Minaj responded, “We’re the cool kids.”
Throughout her career, the Trinidadian-born artist has been known for her chart-topping hits like “Super Freaky Girl,” “Anaconda,” and “Starships.” She has received 12 Grammy nominations, showcasing her influence in the music industry. Interestingly, Minaj’s past includes vocal opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, particularly in 2018 when she condemned the separation of families at the border.
Now, as she embraces a new political narrative, Minaj stated, “It’s OK to change your mind.” This sentiment resonates with many as they navigate the complexities of political affiliations and personal beliefs in an ever-evolving landscape.
