Zachary High Girls Basketball Team Aims for Another Title

The Zachary High School girls’ basketball team is gearing up for the 2025-2026 season with high hopes following their championship victory last year. The team, known as the Broncos, clinched the state title in the previous season by defeating top-seeded Parkway 51-44 in the finals. This year, however, the team faces a significant transformation, returning only one starter: senior Ava Raymond, who recently signed with McNeese State University.

Coach Tami McClure acknowledges the challenges ahead as the defending champions. “Everyone is coming after you and thinks you are the team to beat,” she stated, highlighting the pressure that accompanies their title. McClure emphasized that this year’s squad is distinct from last year’s, introducing the theme of “unflappable,” defined as being marked by assurance and self-control.

New Faces and Returning Talent

In addition to Raymond, who has been a pillar for the team over her four years, the Broncos will rely on several key contributors from the previous season. Junior Ayja Walker and sophomores Asia Bell and Kennedi Whitfield are expected to step up, having gained valuable playoff experience last year. Freshman Marcia Robinson will also join the starting lineup, bringing in fresh energy.

The coaching staff has been enhanced with the addition of assistant coach Gett Thomas, who previously coached boys’ teams at Oakdale and Anacoco. McClure noted that Thomas has been a great addition to the program, bringing a wealth of experience.

Despite the lack of returning starters, McClure has strategically scheduled tough opponents to prepare the Broncos for the challenges of the district and state playoffs. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the team is battle-tested before competing in the highly competitive District 4-5A.

Looking Ahead

As the season progresses, McClure remains optimistic about the team’s dynamics. She praised Raymond’s dedication, stating, “Ava has been our rock for four years… You can’t get her out of the gym because she is such a hard worker on and off the court.” Raymond is close to reaching the significant milestone of 2,000 career points, underscoring her vital role in the team.

Currently, the Broncos hold the top position in the power rankings with an impressive record of 7-0. McClure highlighted the competitive nature of the district, with teams like Woodlawn posing a significant challenge. She mentioned that while there is no dominant team in the state this year, several strong contenders, including Slidell, Natchitoches-Central, Prairieville, and Parkway, could make a run for the title.

The Broncos will participate in the Barbe tournament on December 29-30, 2025, wrapping up the year with high expectations. They will return to action shortly after, starting 2026 with games on January 2-3.

McClure expressed her enthusiasm for the current group of players, noting, “They are a really fun group to work with because they get along so well and are working hard toward reaching our goals.” The team’s ability to remain unflappable under pressure will be pivotal as they pursue another championship title.
