Netflix’s ‘His & Hers’ Fails to Ignite with Weak Storytelling

Netflix’s new limited series, His & Hers, has struggled to resonate with audiences, falling short of expectations set by its promising source material and creative team. The series, which debuted on January 5, 2024, features acclaimed writer-director William Oldroyd, known for his work on Lady Macbeth and Eileen. Despite this pedigree, the adaptation of Alice Feeney‘s novel has been met with criticism for its lackluster storytelling and character development.

The narrative kicks off with a murder in the small town of Dahlonega, Georgia, an hour from Atlanta. The victim is a local resident, which makes the crime particularly shocking for a community that has never experienced such violence. Jack Harper (played by Jon Bernthal), a detective and native of Dahlonega, is thrust into the investigation. Complicating matters is Anna (portrayed by Tessa Thompson), a former news anchor who returns to the town after a year-long absence. The series presents their intertwined lives as they navigate personal and professional challenges, but ultimately, it falls short in delivering a compelling mystery.

As the story unfolds over five episodes, it becomes apparent that the plot hinges on a series of improbable coincidences. Anna discovers that the murder victim was her high-school frenemy, while Jack has his own connections to the case, leading both to become suspects. This lack of convincing character motivation leaves viewers questioning the plausibility of the storyline, particularly as neither character exhibits the skills expected of a detective or journalist.

The series employs a narrative device that attempts to provide multiple perspectives, but it fails to engage the audience effectively. The voiceover narration, intended to add depth and complexity, often resorts to clichés that detract from the viewing experience. One particularly uninspired line states, “There are at least two sides to every story,” which feels more like a tired trope than a meaningful insight.

The performances of Thompson and Bernthal, while commendable in isolation, are hindered by a lack of chemistry and poorly developed characters. Their interactions often lack the emotional weight needed to convey a shared history, making their relationship feel superficial. Supporting characters, including Sunita Mani as Jack’s partner and Pablo Schreiber as a cameraman, also struggle to deliver memorable performances, with many appearing trapped in one-dimensional roles.

As the series approaches its finale, the lack of narrative momentum becomes increasingly evident. The conclusion attempts to tie together the various plot threads but ultimately results in a disjointed and unsatisfying resolution. Viewers are left with more questions than answers, and the final revelations feel less like surprises and more like a forced attempt at intrigue.

Despite the series’ shortcomings, some performances stand out. Chris Bauer, who plays the victim’s husband, injects a degree of energy into his role, while Marin Ireland manages to convey emotional depth despite limited material. Sunita Mani’s character, Priya, resonates with viewers as she navigates the absurdities surrounding her, perhaps highlighting what the series could have been with stronger writing.

The production itself also falls into the trap of style over substance. The visual aesthetics, while polished, often feel disconnected from the narrative, failing to create an immersive atmosphere that could enhance the suspense. Oldroyd’s previous works demonstrated a keen understanding of genre, but in His & Hers, the execution feels hollow and formulaic.

In conclusion, His & Hers is a missed opportunity, given its talented cast and a director with a proven track record. The series’ reliance on contrived plot devices, lack of character development, and an unsatisfactory conclusion ultimately detracts from what could have been a gripping exploration of mystery and emotional complexity. As audiences continue to seek engaging content, this offering may quickly fade from memory, overshadowed by more compelling narratives on streaming platforms.
