Honus Wagner Baseball Card Fetches $5.1 Million at Auction
A rare baseball card featuring the legendary Honus Wagner sold for an astonishing $5.124 million at a recent auction hosted by Goldin Auctions. The card, part of the iconic T206 set, was previously owned by brothers Dennis and Douglas Shields, who have connections to Los Angeles and Marin County, California.
The card measures approximately two-and-a-half inches by one-and-a-half inches and is one of only about 55 known T206 Wagner cards in existence. Encapsulated by the PSA grading service with a grade of 1 (out of a possible 10), it achieved a record price for its grade, surpassing earlier sales of higher-graded cards that fetched $6.6 million and $7.25 million in the past decade.
The Story Behind the Card’s Rarity
Produced between 1909 and 1911 by the American Tobacco Company, the T206 set featured baseball players on cards inserted in cigarette packs. Wagner, who played shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, famously objected to his image being used to promote tobacco products aimed at children. Consequently, he requested that his card be withdrawn from circulation, which contributed to its rarity and legendary status.
Mathew Salter, the nephew of the Shields brothers, shared that the family was excited about the auction. “We were watching it closely,” he said during a break between his sons’ Little League and travel baseball practices. “It was a bit bittersweet to see the card leave the family.” Salter clarified that he and his immediate family are not direct beneficiaries of the sale and expressed uncertainty about how his uncles plan to use the proceeds, noting, “Neither of them are big spenders.”
Family Reaction and Broader Impact
The Shields family took pride in knowing the card will be forever associated with their name in the sports card community. Salter remarked, “I’m happy that the name will forever be associated with baseball history.” The PSA grading service has labeled the card as part of the “Shields Family Collection,” solidifying its lineage.
Local sports card dealer Bobby Michener, owner of Diamond Sports Cards in San Rafael, commented on the significance of the sale, noting it sets a new benchmark for cards of that grade. “It’s a solid price that will encourage those auctioning off six-figure cards,” he said. Michener had accurately predicted the auction’s final price, demonstrating his expertise in the market.
The high-profile sale has generated considerable media attention, drawing interest from individuals outside the sports card collecting community. Cris Taylor, a T206 collector from Corte Madera, noted that even those who previously had little interest in sports cards have reached out to discuss the remarkable price. “People love this story because they think there might be one in their grandfather’s attic,” he said, highlighting the allure of rare collectibles.
With private equity groups increasingly investing in sports cards, market trends indicate that prices may continue to rise. Recent transactions include a 1952 Mickey Mantle card selling for $750,000, a signed 1933 Babe Ruth card fetching $1.4 million, and a rookie card of football legend Jim Brown being sold for $219,000. The growing interest in sports cards has placed them alongside other collectible commodities like rare wine and coins.
As the excitement surrounding the Shields Wagner card continues, Salter plans a trip this summer to Cooperstown, New York, the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame, where two iconic Wagner cards are on display. “It’s going to be so exciting to see a T206 Wagner in the Hall,” he said, reflecting the enduring legacy of this remarkable piece of baseball history.
