UPDATE: A shocking rise in ski and snowboard injuries among children has been reported in Metro Detroit, with over 30 young patients treated this month alone. Dr. Ahmed Bazzi, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, stated that this alarming trend has never been witnessed in his practice before, with March 2023 bringing especially dangerous conditions on the slopes.

Thirteen-year-old Gabriel Cline is one of the victims, recovering from a severe skiing accident that shattered both bones in his right leg. “White Lightning was a black diamond. I gained too much speed, hit a bump, crashed, and twisted my leg,” Gabriel recounted, explaining how he went from excitement to trauma in mere seconds.

Dr. Bazzi confirmed the extent of Gabriel’s injuries, revealing they required surgery and a steel rod for stabilization. Remarkably, Gabriel has begun walking again within weeks. “It’s not really been that painful at night anymore,” he said, demonstrating resilience despite the ordeal.

This winter, Dr. Bazzi has observed a significant uptick in ski and snowboard injuries, attributing the rise to several factors, including riskier behavior among young skiers, inadequate training, poorly fitted equipment, and treacherous slope conditions. “I’ve seen a really big uptick in ski and snowboard-related injuries just this season alone,” Bazzi stated.

As March continues to deliver harsh winter conditions, icy slopes are creating an environment ripe for accidents. Dr. Bazzi explained, “Natural snow has packed up, thawed, frozen, become icy…what you’re landing on is harder, slicker.” The combination of these elements is leading to substantial injuries, including shoulder injuries, elbow fractures, femur fractures, knee ligament tears, and growth plate injuries in children.

Gabriel aims to turn his painful experience into a lesson for his three younger siblings. “I learned not to pressure myself into going down hills too advanced for me and I learned my limits,” he shared.

Dr. Bazzi emphasizes the importance of preventative measures before heading to the slopes. “Proper instruction, fitted gear, checking your bindings, learning how to fall, and stretching before and after skiing are critical,” he advised.

As families prepare to hit the slopes, experts urge caution and preparation to ensure safety. With the current conditions in Metro Detroit, the right gear and mindfulness could make a significant difference in preventing severe injuries.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the ski season progresses and more data becomes available.
