Norovirus Outbreak Forces Closure of Fort Worth Middle School

More than 100 students and several staff members at Creekview Middle School in Fort Worth were affected by a sudden outbreak of norovirus, leading to the school’s closure on December 1, 2023. Symptoms such as vomiting and nausea rapidly spread through the campus, prompting the Eagle Mountain–Saginaw Independent School District (ISD) to implement immediate measures. The district began cleaning efforts earlier in the week, but as more cases emerged, officials decided on a full professional disinfection of the facility.

Prior to the closure, district leaders consulted with Tarrant County Public Health, which confirmed a growing trend of gastrointestinal illnesses among students. Reports indicated a significant number of cases displaying symptoms consistent with norovirus, a highly contagious virus that thrives in crowded settings like schools. The district anticipates reopening Creekview on Monday, December 4, 2023.

Health Experts Urge Vigilance as Flu Season Peaks

The temporary closure serves as a stark reminder of the concurrent rise in both influenza and gastrointestinal viruses this winter. Dr. James Pinckney II, a physician based in Dallas, highlighted the aggressive strains of influenza circulating within communities. He advised individuals to prioritize vaccination, rest, and hygiene to mitigate the risk of illness.

Clinics and hospitals across North Texas have reported an uptick in respiratory visits, aligning with the seasonal prevalence of stomach viruses. The flu season has reached a critical point, and physicians emphasize that preventive measures can significantly reduce infection rates.

Understanding Norovirus and Preventive Measures

Norovirus spreads rapidly through person-to-person contact, contaminated food, surfaces, and even airborne particles from vomit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies norovirus as a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis. To counter its spread, the CDC recommends rigorous handwashing, frequent disinfection of surfaces, and that infected individuals refrain from preparing food and stay home for at least 48 hours after symptoms cease.

The district’s decision to deep-clean the Creekview campus aligns with these recommendations, aiming to break the chain of transmission.

To protect households, experts stress the importance of basic hygiene practices. Regularly washing hands with soap and water, keeping symptomatic family members at home, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces are essential steps. Dr. Pinckney also emphasized the need for adequate sleep—between eight to nine hours—as a foundation for good health, especially during flu season.

While most norovirus cases resolve within one to three days, certain populations, including young children, older adults, and individuals with chronic conditions, face heightened risks of dehydration. Medical attention should be sought if a person is unable to keep fluids down. The CDC recommends that antiviral medications for influenza can reduce the severity of illness when administered early, particularly for those at increased risk.

Parents are encouraged to adhere to school guidelines regarding testing and return-to-school policies when their children are ill. As of now, all other campuses within the Eagle Mountain–Saginaw ISD remain open, and families are advised to remain alert to updates from both the district and local health officials, while continuing to practice standard hygiene measures to prevent further outbreaks.
