Blue Jays’ Santander Out for Playoffs After Back Injury

UPDATE: The Toronto Blue Jays face a significant setback as outfielder Anthony Santander has been ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs due to a persistent back injury. Major League Baseball confirmed the roster change just hours before Game 4 against the Seattle Mariners on October 19, 2023.

Santander’s injury issues have plagued him throughout the postseason. He was scratched from Game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) and despite starting in Game 3, he was replaced after just two at-bats during Toronto’s 13-4 victory, which narrowed the series deficit to 2-1.

The league’s announcement came shortly before the crucial game in Seattle, with Dr. Gary Green, the MLB medical director, confirming Santander’s condition after a comprehensive medical review. To fill the void, Joey Loperfido has been added to the Blue Jays’ roster.

This ruling is a major blow to the Blue Jays, as Santander will not be eligible to return for the ALCS or the World Series should Toronto advance. The outfielder signed a lucrative $92.5 million contract with the team last offseason but has struggled with injuries, missing nearly four months earlier this season due to a left shoulder issue.

In the postseason, Santander’s performance has been less than stellar, hitting only .200 across five games, with no home runs, two RBIs, and five strikeouts. His overall season stats show a .175 average with six home runs and 18 RBIs over 54 games.

As the Blue Jays prepare for their next match, fans are left wondering how this absence will affect their chances of advancing in the playoffs. The team must quickly adapt and strategize for a critical Game 4, with or without one of their key players. Stay tuned for developments as the series unfolds.
