Community Remembers Steven Orcutt: A Lifelong Advocate for Art and Education

Steven Marion Orcutt, aged 80, passed away on October 19, 2025, at Heartland Meadows in Iola, Kansas. Born on July 6, 1945, in Humboldt, Kansas, he was the son of the late Harvey M. and Velma A. (McIntyre) Orcutt. His life was characterized by a deep commitment to education, community involvement, and a passion for the arts.
Growing up in the close-knit community of Humboldt, Steven enjoyed a childhood rich with experiences that fostered lifelong friendships. He fondly recalled birthday parties, costume contests, and outdoor adventures, including climbing Pikes Peak and learning to throw hand grenades. These formative years shaped his outlook and prepared him for the challenges and joys life would bring.
Steven’s athletic prowess was evident when he won the Kansas State High School championship in javelin in 1963. This achievement earned him a track scholarship to Chanute Junior College, followed by further studies at the University of Kansas and Kansas State Teacher’s College in Emporia, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education in 1968. His teaching career began at Garnett High School before he moved to the Colony-Kincaid Schools and ultimately concluded at the Iola School System, where he taught art to grade school students.
While at Emporia, Steven met fellow art student Cecelia Percival. Their mutual passion for art blossomed into love, and they married on June 15, 1969. Together, they nurtured a generation of children, encouraging creativity and a sense of adventure. Though they did not have children of their own, their impact on the community was profound.
To create joyful experiences reminiscent of their own childhoods, the Orcutts organized events such as the annual “Halloween Celebration at the Orcutts,” transforming their neighborhood into a festive gathering for families. They also hosted the popular “Back-to-School Moonlight Splash Swim Night,” reinforcing the importance of community connections and shared joy.
Steven’s artistic talents extended beyond teaching; he was a passionate singer and actor. He performed in various community theatre productions at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, where his most memorable role was that of Professor Harold Hill in “The Music Man.” His love for photography was also notable, as he often captured poignant moments with his camera, sharing framed photographs with friends and family.
In addition to his artistic endeavors, Steven pursued a career in auctioneering and real estate, where he understood the significance of creating an enjoyable experience for buyers. His expertise led him to manage numerous estate auctions in Southeast Kansas and serve as the regular auctioneer for art auctions in Colorado and Death Valley, California. This collaboration with Cecelia, who shared his passion for art and antiques, made them a formidable team throughout their 56-year marriage.
Steven is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cecelia, who passed away on May 24, 2025, as well as his parents and sisters.
A joint memorial service for Steven and Cecelia Orcutt will be held on October 30, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. Visitation is scheduled for October 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service’s The Venue, located at 1883 US Hwy 54 in Iola.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bowlus Fine Arts Center or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Humboldt and can be left at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be shared online at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
