Fall Theatrical Lineup: Comedies to Light Up Local Stages

The autumn season brings an exciting array of comedies to theaters across the Greater Boston area, with performances scheduled from late October through early November. These productions promise both entertainment and a welcome distraction from the impending cold weather.
One of the highlights is the musical comedy “Murder For Two,” which will run at the Greater Boston Stage in Stoneham from October 24 to November 9. This zany whodunnit mixes music, humor, and suspense as it unravels the mystery surrounding the death of the great American novelist Arthur Whitney at his surprise party. With just two actors portraying a total of 13 characters, the show has been described by The New York Times as an “ingenious miniature musical in the form of a snazzy vaudevillian double-act.” Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s website.
Another production generating buzz is “Family Album,” set to debut at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts on November 7-9. Written by Eloise Hoffman and directed by Donna DeWitt, this one-act comedy takes audiences to a New Hampshire cottage where a family navigates their chaotic summer traditions across generations. From mouse invasions to disastrous game nights, the play promises to deliver plenty of laughs. Tickets are priced at $20, with doors opening 30 minutes before showtime, and discounts available for students and seniors.
On November 10, “The Jester of Camelot,” written by Jack Neary and Andy Dolan, will have a special staged reading at the Boston Playwright’s Theatre. The play focuses on comedian Vaughn Meader, whose career ended abruptly on the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Neary has indicated that Meader’s widow, Sheila, will attend the reading, which adds a personal touch to the event. Further details regarding casting are expected to be announced soon.
In addition to these productions, the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine has issued an audition notice for local performers. Auditions will be held by appointment on October 25 for the role of Susan Waverly in the upcoming production of “White Christmas,” scheduled for performances from December 3 to 21 at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The character requires a female-identifying child aged 10-12 with an excellent singing voice and strong movement skills. Interested participants should prepare an audition form and bring a headshot or resume, or email them in advance.
As the theater scene gears up for a bustling fall season, audiences can expect a rich blend of humor and creativity that showcases the talent and passion of local artists. Each production offers a unique experience, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy as the weather turns cooler.
