President Donald Trump expressed a willingness to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his upcoming trip to Asia this week. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to Japan, Trump stated, “I’d love to meet with him if he’d like to meet. I got along great with Kim Jong Un. I liked him. He liked me.”

Trump’s comments came as he prepared for a visit that includes a stop in South Korea. He indicated that he would be open to extending his trip to facilitate a meeting with Kim. “If he wants to meet, I’ll be in South Korea,” Trump added. This potential meeting reflects the ongoing interest in dialogue between the United States and North Korea, particularly following Trump’s historic summit with Kim in 2019.

On Friday, Trump had hinted at his openness to a meeting, saying, “Well, I would if he would contact. The last time I met him, I put it out over the internet that I’m coming to South Korea and if he’d like to meet, I’m open to it.” He noted the challenges of communication with North Korea, quipping, “They don’t have a lot of telephone service. They have a lot of nuclear weapons but not a lot of telephone service.”

Trump reiterated his openness to dialogue, stating, “Yeah, I’d be open to it, 100 percent. I got along very well with Kim Jong Un.” This desire for engagement comes in the wake of North Korea’s continued development of its nuclear arsenal and a series of intercontinental ballistic missile tests.

The prospect of a meeting between Trump and Kim raises questions about the future of U.S.-North Korea relations. While Trump aims to persuade North Korea to disarm its nuclear program, North Korea’s recent military activities suggest a complex and challenging diplomatic landscape.

As the world watches, Trump’s statements highlight a willingness to explore avenues for communication, potentially signaling a new chapter in the delicate dynamics of the Korean Peninsula.
