Eddy Moretti has been appointed as the Executive Producer of Laugh Cry Wow, a nonfiction studio co-founded by Jami Gertz and Bayan Joonam. This marks the studio’s first executive hire since its launch earlier this year. Moretti, who previously served as Chief Creative Officer at Vice Media for two decades, is recognized for producing a wide array of programming and features, making him a significant addition to the team.

In his new position, Moretti will work closely with the creative and development teams at Laugh Cry Wow to craft innovative and original stories. His focus will be on creating content that not only challenges traditional storytelling conventions but also resonates with audiences across various platforms. He will also spearhead the company’s initiatives to establish strategic brand partnerships.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to join Laugh Cry Wow!” Moretti stated. “Bayan and Jami have built a wonderful company, a wickedly well-oiled content creation machine focused on telling stories that resonate deeply with core human emotions and values.” He emphasized his excitement about joining a team of talented creatives, describing them as a “tight-knit family” full of curiosity and energy. Moretti’s extensive experience in the media landscape positions him well to navigate the ongoing changes in production and distribution.

Joonam expressed his enthusiasm for Moretti’s appointment, noting, “Having known the impact of Eddy’s work for many years before I even met him, I couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome him to Laugh Cry Wow. His innovative approach to storytelling is exactly what we are looking for here as the nonfiction space evolves.”

During his tenure at Vice, Moretti was instrumental in forging partnerships that launched influential brands such as Noisey and Motherboard. His narrative feature credits include critically acclaimed works like Amazon’s The Report, The Bad Batch, The Beach Bum, Climax, and Lords of Chaos. In 2016, he also launched Viceland, an Emmy-winning cable channel that has reached over 80 territories worldwide.

Moretti’s contributions to the industry have garnered numerous accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, and nominations for the Canadian Screen Awards and Cannes Lions. His work has been showcased at prestigious film festivals, including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, the Toronto International Film Festival, Telluride, Sundance, and South by Southwest (SXSW). Moretti is scheduled to speak at AdWeek’s BrandWeek: Made in ATL panel on November 5, 2023.

Gertz and Joonam’s Laugh Cry Wow is in the process of building a diverse library of premium nonfiction content across three main verticals: sports, music, and stranger-than-fiction. Each area aims to explore untold stories that reflect the emotional and cultural pulse of contemporary society. Their debut collaboration, Magic City: An American Fantasy, delves into the narrative of Atlanta’s iconic strip club, which has played a significant role in the careers of numerous hip-hop stars while shaping the sound and aesthetic of Southern rap. The five-part docuseries premiered at SXSW to critical acclaim and received a nomination for a Critics Choice Award for Best Limited Documentary Feature. It is currently available for streaming on Starz.

With Moretti joining the team, Laugh Cry Wow appears poised to make a significant impact in the nonfiction content landscape, leveraging his extensive experience to create compelling narratives that resonate with global audiences.
