Washington Spirit Advances to Semifinals with Dramatic Shootout Win
The Washington Spirit secured a spot in the NWSL semifinals after a tense quarterfinal match against Racing Louisville FC on November 8, 2025. Despite star forward Trinity Rodman remaining on the bench, the Spirit triumphed in a penalty shootout, winning 3-1 after a gripping match that saw them concede a late equalizer.
Playing at Audi Field, the Spirit dominated the first half, maintaining over 70% possession. Gift Monday opened the scoring in the 73rd minute, putting the Spirit ahead. However, Racing Louisville’s Kayla Fischer struck back with a goal in stoppage time, forcing the match into extra time. The Spirit managed to hold on, and after a scoreless extra period, the game was decided by penalties.
Key Contributions and Challenges
The shootout showcased the skills of goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury, who made two crucial saves, helping the Spirit to advance for the second consecutive year. Kingsbury’s penalty shootout prowess is noteworthy; she now holds the record for the most shootout saves in NWSL history, with nine to her name. “I imagine that’s in their minds,” Kingsbury said, reflecting on her opponents’ potential intimidation. “But I give a lot of credit to our fans. They’re so loud.”
Rodman, listed as questionable before the match, did not warm up or play, as she continues her recovery from a right knee injury sustained last month. Spirit head coach Adrián González expressed optimism about Rodman’s progress, stating, “She’s checking the boxes really good.” Despite her absence on the field, Rodman played a vital role as a leader from the sidelines, cheering on her teammates.
Injuries compounded the Spirit’s challenges, as starting fullback Gabby Carle exited the match in the first half with a hamstring injury, while center-back Tara McKeown suffered an ankle injury during extra time. McKeown was seen on crutches post-match, raising concerns about her availability for the semifinals next week.
A Personal Victory for Gift Monday
Monday’s goal was particularly poignant, coming just weeks after the passing of her father. After briefly returning to Nigeria to be with family, she dedicated her goal to her father, who she credited as her first coach. “He made me who I am today,” she shared, emphasizing the importance of perseverance in her life. “This goal is the proof.”
The Spirit’s victory, witnessed by a sellout crowd of 19,215 fans, was not just a testament to their skill but also their resilience in the face of adversity. They will now prepare to host either the Portland Thorns or the San Diego Wave in the semifinals, with hopes of continuing their playoff run.
The upcoming match promises to be another thrilling encounter as the Spirit battle for a place in the NWSL Championship, drawing on their recent experiences to fuel their determination.
