Trump Appeals to Supreme Court Over E. Jean Carroll Verdict

Former President Donald Trump has formally requested the U.S. Supreme Court to review a New York civil jury’s decision from 2023 that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. This appeal aims to overturn a $5 million verdict that has resulted from years of legal battles surrounding Carroll’s allegations. Trump has consistently described these allegations as “implausible” and argued that the jury’s conclusions were not credible.

The jury’s unanimous verdict concluded that there was a preponderance of evidence supporting Carroll’s claim that Trump sexually assaulted her during a mid-1990s encounter at a department store in New York City. Although the jury did not agree with Carroll’s assertion that she was raped, trial judge Lewis Kaplan later indicated that the jury’s finding of sexual abuse implied a form of digital rape. Trump contends that Kaplan made several errors in evidentiary rulings that negatively impacted his case.

In December 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit denied Trump’s appeal and later rejected a request for an en banc review, which would have involved a full panel of judges examining the case. With the Supreme Court now as his final avenue for recourse, Trump’s legal team continues to frame the matter as part of a broader political agenda against him. A spokesperson stated, “The American People stand with President Trump as they demand an immediate end to all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded travesty of the Carroll Hoaxes.”

Carroll’s legal team has received financial backing from a nonprofit linked to Democratic donor Reid Hoffman. Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations since she first made them public in 2019 through a book excerpt in New York Magazine. In addition to this current appeal, Trump is contesting a separate federal jury verdict from January 2024, which held him liable for making further defamatory statements against Carroll. Combined, these legal outcomes have resulted in over $88 million awarded to Carroll.

Trump’s appeal to the Supreme Court not only seeks to challenge the jury’s findings but also aims to address what he describes as politically motivated attacks against him during his political career. As he prepares for this next legal battle, the implications of the Supreme Court’s decision could resonate well beyond Trump’s personal interests, potentially influencing broader discussions about accountability and the legal system’s role in high-profile cases.

As the case moves forward, the responses from both Trump’s legal team and Carroll’s representatives remain crucial to understanding the evolving narrative surrounding these allegations and their implications for the former president’s political future.
