Asian Markets Show Mixed Results Amid Holiday Trading Conditions
Asian shares experienced mixed results on Thursday as holiday trading conditions prevailed, with several markets closed for Christmas festivities. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo fell slightly by less than 0.1%, closing at 50,317.43. Despite this minor decline, the index has surged nearly 30% throughout the year, reflecting strong investor sentiment.
The dollar dipped to 155.70 Japanese yen from the previous 155.94 yen, while the euro remained stable at $1.1780. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite index recorded a modest gain of 0.3%, buoyed by a supportive statement from the People’s Bank of China, which assured investors of adequate money supply to bolster financing and economic growth. Hong Kong’s exchange, however, remained closed for the holiday.
Trading activity was notably light across the region, with many investors opting to defer significant transactions until after the holiday period. In Southeast Asia, shares fell in both Thailand and Indonesia, contributing to the mixed performance of Asian markets.
In the United States, the S&P 500 index increased by 0.3% on Wednesday, closing at 6,932.05. The Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a 0.6% rise, finishing at 48,731.16, while the Nasdaq composite added 0.2% to close at 23,613.31. Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was significantly reduced, with approximately 1.8 billion shares traded, which is roughly one-third of the typical daily volume.
U.S. markets will resume full trading hours on Friday, although volumes are expected to remain low as many investors have concluded their positions for the year. For 2023, the S&P 500 has risen by more than 17%, driven by optimism surrounding the deregulatory policies of the Trump administration and the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance profitability across various sectors.
Looking ahead, market participants are closely monitoring the trajectory of the U.S. economy and the Federal Reserve’s upcoming interest rate decisions. Analysts anticipate that the Fed will maintain current rates during its January meeting, particularly following a surprising economic growth rate of 4.3% in the third quarter—the fastest expansion in two years. This growth has primarily stemmed from resilient consumer spending, despite ongoing inflationary pressures.
In labor market news, the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits decreased by 10,000 to 214,000 for the week ending December 20, 2023, according to the Labor Department. This figure is notably below the 232,000 new applications forecast by analysts surveyed by FactSet, indicating a labor market that remains relatively strong despite signs of slowing growth.
In corporate news, shares of Dynavax Technologies surged by 38.2% after French pharmaceutical company Sanofi announced it would acquire the California-based vaccine maker in a deal valued at $2.2 billion. This acquisition will enhance Sanofi’s portfolio with Dynavax’s hepatitis B vaccines and a shingles vaccine currently in development.
Conversely, shares of Novo Nordisk rose by 1.8% following the approval of a pill version of its weight-loss medication, Wegovy, by U.S. regulators. Despite this positive news, Novo Nordisk’s stock remains down nearly 40% for the year, largely due to intensified competition from Eli Lilly, whose shares have increased by 40% in 2023.
In the commodities market, U.S. crude oil settled at $58.35 per barrel, while Brent crude finished at $61.80 per barrel, reflecting ongoing fluctuations in global oil prices.
As the holiday season continues, market participants are keenly awaiting the resumption of regular trading activity and the economic indicators that will shape investor sentiment in the new year.
