Gojek, the Indonesian ride-hailing giant, has taken decisive action by permanently banning a passenger accused of engaging in indecent behavior with a partner during a Gocar ride in Cipulir, Kebayoran Lama, Jakarta. The incident, which was captured on video and circulated widely on social media, prompted the company to investigate and confirm violations of its policies.

According to Rosel Lavina, the Head of Corporate Affairs at Gojek, the investigation revealed that the passenger’s actions contravened the platform’s rules. As a result, Gojek suspended the account permanently. “Based on our investigation, it was proven that the passenger committed violations. The account has been permanently blocked,” Lavina stated on February 15, 2024.

This firm response aims to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future and to maintain a safe environment within the company’s ecosystem. Gojek is committed to ensuring the safety of both customers and drivers, implementing a series of preventive measures and strict actions against violators.

Gojek encourages its driver partners to report any misconduct through official channels, including the help page in the Gojek Driver app. “In emergency situations, drivers and passengers can use the emergency button in the app, which connects directly to Gojek’s Emergency Unit, available 24 hours a day,” Lavina added.

The incident was highlighted by a driver identified as AR, who shared his experience of transporting the couple during the journey. He received an order from Central Jakarta to South Jakarta and grew suspicious when the female passenger kept lying down and resting her head on the male passenger’s lap. To confirm his suspicions, AR adjusted his rearview mirror and witnessed the couple engaging in inappropriate behavior.

“I started to lower the middle mirror to check. Once I did, I confronted them,” AR explained to reporters on February 12, 2024. He noted that initially, the couple did not respond to his warnings. However, after he raised his voice, the female passenger began to sit up.

This incident raises important questions about passenger conduct in ride-hailing services and the measures companies must implement to ensure a respectful and safe environment for both drivers and riders. Gojek’s swift action in banning the offending passenger underscores its commitment to upholding community standards and safeguarding the integrity of its services.
